Default What do you use to pump up your tires?

Other than ordinary air, what do some of you use to pump up your tires? And how much performance do you noticed with it?

Air compressor.

I heard that compressed air from a 50 gallon Craftsman tank adds about 4 HP at the wheels.

I use helium too! But just because I like sucking the air out of them to lower the PSI and have a buzz while i go down the strip.

I think he's asking about filling the tire with Nitrogen or something else.

From what I've read, it doesn't do much.

But as long as we're on the bandwagon: I fill my tires up at the gas station.

Nitrogen all the way. Pressure loss over a 7 month/10k mile period, exactly 2psi per tire. If you have access to it, I highly recommend it.

Yes, sorry my question wasn't specific enough, but I am talking about Nitrogen. I've read somewhere before that you can gain a little more performance by using nitrogen instead of the ordinary air. What does it really do?

Nitrogen is more stable, and doesn't react to changes in temperature as much as regular air. For example, a tire infalted with air, and heated to say 160º might "grow 7-10psi. That same tire filled with nitrogen will only rise 1-2psi. It also works through the pores of the tire much more slowly and atmospheric air, so you can retain more consistent pressures.

Where are the typical places you can get nitrogen?

Tire places usually have it... but hear it's not worth it at all... good ol' air has served us well since the invent of the inflatable tire.... good enough for henry ford, good enough for me

^^^ That article should motivate everyone to use nitrogen, as the tire companies are all tacitly against it. I mean, if it makes tires last longer and gives you better fuel economy as a side effect, of course they're not going to want you to do it.

But $39!! Our whole 100cf nitrogen bottle runs $21 a fill, and will fill about 20 race tires. Doing 4 purges and a fill on my 245s used about 120psi out of the tank (less than 1/8th of a fill), so the actual cost of the gas is about $2. Now there's a profit industry.
