A very similar sound starting coming from my block a while back. (Before I had engine mods). It ended up being a cam gear failure, and Scion had to replace a ton of parts.

Hopefully you're still under warranty. If so, take it to the dealership and tell them to fix it!

I'm under warranty. If I do take it to dealer I should probably reinstall original intake? Only problem is my car is in Florida and my intake is in Georgia. How long was your car down for?

Yea I would highly recommend installing your original intake before you take it in. They will no doubt blame the issue on the alter air/fuel ratio, and even if they don't blame it on the intake they will note in their system that you have modified the air intake system and all future problems related to that will not be covered.

My car was down for 4-5 days I believe while they replaced the cam gear and all of the gaskets. I think it took a little longer than normal because they had to order a few parts that weren't in stock

Well I have taken my car in a few times already so they have probably already noted it. That wouldn't have anything to do with it would it? Still learning a-lot about car maintenance even though I am an aircraft mechanic

I very highly doubt the intake is related to it, but if a dealership is looking for an excuse to put it on you they have it. I would take it to a dealership and see what they say, and if they blame it on the intake.. try a different dealership. Eventually you'll find one that is willing to help you. They get paid regardless of if it's under warranty or not lol

Well it looks like I am gonna have to do it with the intake installed. Some say it sounds like it is misfiring, I was going to change the plugs out in the morning. All I know is I was just driving and then BAM it starts making that awful sound and I drove straight home.

That really sucks man, I'm sorry to hear that. I would definitely just let the dealership deal with it, so if anything else happens it's not on you

Only issue with taking it to the dealer is that if he is denied warranty because of the intake, it goes into the system. He can go to any dealer in America and he's screwed. There is a law against stuff like this, dealer will have to prove that the intake actually caused the issue. If it is a cam gear issue, not sure how an intake would be related.

Also, that is definitely not misfiring. Sounds like metal is banging.

Oh my, that sounds terrible! Hope that doesn't happen to me, especially since I'm out of warranty...

Ended up being timing chain. Then a week later it almost died on me. Its still in shop. #1 cylinder lost all compression. Complete valve job in work. Parts on backorder.

Did the dealer end up covering it?
