I was looking on the thmotorsports website and noticed that the SRI and CAI actually have different filters, the CAI has a 3" while the SRI has a 2.75". How does filter size affect performance?

Water entering the intake has a potential to cause hydrolock. hydrolock is when water enters the cylinder and will not burn off. Becuase we know from science that air can be compressed but liquids cannot, it is not good to have water inside the cylinder. Can cause many problems.

Recommendations for if hydrolock occurs. The engine will shut off. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES, do not try to recrank the car. Most recommend taking out the spark plugs and bumping the ignition over to push the water out. You want to get all water out before putting the spark plugs back in.

I would definitely recommend getting a hydrosheild for the intake. Reduces the risk, although Injen clearly states that the hydrosheild is water RESISTANT and not water proof.

This mainly depends on the volume of water. Small water from rain like in my case has the potential to damage sensors as well which is another risk but if I hit a decent size puddle then hydrolock would have occurred. Even a truck with big enough tires could have caused it at the right angle. Definitely a close call either way. And if there is enough water to stop the motor there could be enough volume to bend the connecting rods or crank even without the spark plugs in especially if a cylinder was on it's compression stroke and both valves were closed. My recommendation would be to not use a CAI in any rain.

not sure what it means completely...or how Scion looks at it

but this is what TRDsparks says about dealerships not allowed to void warranties:

and just in case here is the warranty manual:

a question for those that got the CAI but installed it put it in as an SRI first,

did you notice any major difference in how it sounded as an SRI vs CAI? Which did you think sounded better?

Short ram sounds better as the filter is closer to you and not in the fender well. I have noticed no power difference and actually went from the cold air to the short ram due to rain. Honestly if it wasn't for request of a video I would have been better off just getting the short ram as I'm going to leave it in this setup from now on anyways

thanks for the info! im probably gonna go with sri then. I didnt realize the CAI went as low as it did until i saw the video. it looks a lot higher in the pictures. plus im in jersey so the water thing is my biggest fear.

ive drowned one car in the past and it sucks. all stock but the floods were just really bad... anyway thanks again!

I am sure there is one or someone can make one of these in a proper size to solve the water problems. They do a hell of a job of dirt bikes and quads.

Honestly I don't see there being a need to solve it cuz I don't think you make more power with the cai anyways. My intake does not get hot in my bay at all even when really getting on it and it makes the same power with the short ram. Personally I think the cold air is not worth the extra 50 bucks plus the addition of more things and money to not have water issues.

I Just installed my Cold Air today, why is everyone one worried about hydrolock, the filter is still way to high up to even make it a concern,I have to say the install was a breeze thanks to papa bear's video. after work tomorrow I will drive for a while and make my ECU happy.

Happy my video helped you! And I didn't think the filter was even close either but after driving in the rain it was definitely getting water. And I don't think the motor hydrolocking is the issue because there is a lot of distance. I posted a few posts back that the issue was more along the lines of the waters effect on the cars MAF as water gets flung up to it when it is raining but probably not enough for hydrolock. I just don't want the sensor getting damaged because of the water getting on it especially for extended periods of time.

How would water get flung up that far? The filter would stop the momentum.
