Default Oil Weight?

Hi everyone, I’ve had my 2011 tC2 for a little over a year now. I bought it with 32,000 miles and at the time the stock output shaft bearing was squealing. That was fixed immediately. But I was wondering what
weight engine oil you guys run. I live in the more Central part of CA. And especially now we have very consistent temps of well over 100. Sometimes 110+. I just think that the 0w20 is way to thin for this temp.

This forum post says you can safely run 10w30. Would it be an issue if I ran 5w30 at least for the hot summer months until it cools down to an average of 70?

0w20 Mobil1 is the way to go. I live in AZ, no issues doing ~7500 mile changes. I also use TRD filters.

I was always leery about factory recommendations for "0" weight oils, but the consensus from the "experts" is that the tolerances of these modern engines are so much better than older days, they "need" the thinner oils. I'm not buying it. Engs. wear, tolerances open up, and the bearings require better lubrications. However, babbit bearings are more forgiving than say a metal ball bearing, and will take a bit more abuse over time. I've had ne problems running 10-30Ws (2014 Scion) here in New England in the summer times. If you're experiencing 100° temps in Cal., I myself would run straight 30W, or even 10-40, but hey, that's just me. (I'm by no means an expert, so don't take it to the bank). Will your eng. thank you for it? Haven't experimented enuff to know.
Your comment about your out-put shaft bearing wearing out at less than 40K has peaked my interest. What was your symptom, if you don't mind me asking? Was it just a squeaky noise only? And when did it squeak? Did Toyota fix it under warrantee?

ok cool thank you for the input.
man’s abought the output shaft bearing. I bought the car March of 2020. It only had 32,000 miles. Abought 9,000$. At first to me it sounded like a throw out bearing. But I would hear it whine while the clutch was pushed in and I was slowing down still in gear. I cannot attest to what the previous owner did but I’m sure it was an older person who kept the car in their garage. Everything was stock no pieces were missing. Even came with all 3 keys and the key code. So abought after 2,000 miles of driving on that bearing it got a little worse so I took it to my local trans shop. I supplied the bearing and they did the job for around 1000$. Minus the fact they toasted the threads on my passenger side axle. So they replaced that. But Since then the only issue I’ve had is that the trans is leaking fluid from the passenger side output shaft seal. But I just top of the trans till I can get some money to get it torn back apart.

I'm glad you got your tranny whine taken care of, but am a little confused about your symptoms. You mentioned it whined when the clutch was in, (which would point to clutch release brg), but also said it was doing it when you were slowing down, which could also point to the out-put shaft bearing/s. Did it do it in neutral when the car "wasn't" moving, and you pushed in the clutch?.
You also said you supplied the bearing/s. Which bearings did they change? I'm sorry to hear about your leak. I'm about to pull a 6 speed apart, and got those two seals from Toyota, and wasn't too happy finding out the 2 were almost $50. .But I guess if that's what it takes. Wonder what the aftermarket charges for those seals, or if they're available?

The whine would stop when the clutch was disengaged. But if the car was moving and I left the car in gear when I pressed in the clutch then it would wine as the car slowed down while the car wasn’t moving the output shaft bearing would whine. Me and my dad both thought it was the throw out bearing. Once the clutch was pushed in the noise would stop. The shop only replaced the output shaft bearing and nothing else. And I’m not to sure abought aftermarket seal. As long as there from a good brand they should be fine. Like I always get my parts from rockauto.com I was thinking abought getting a set of lifters because mine are making a little bit of a ticking noise. Through Toyota it’s 35$ a lifter. And there is 16 of them. On rockauto it was 7-8$ a lifter.

I use-ta deal with RockAuto, till I got screwed on a camshaft. Won't deal with them anymore. Their service is horrible....or should I say, doesn't exists.
As for your lifters, make sure you confirm the noise is actually bad lifters, and not something else valvetrain related. That's a radical difference in price, from Rock to Toyota
But I'm willing to bet the Rock ones are Chinese, and the factory ones are better quality. Guess it depends on how much you like your car, and how long you plan on driving it, to take the chance on the price difference. I'm not sure how easy they are to change, and if not too bad, I might also chance the cheap lifters. 'Cept I would buy them locally from one of the many pars stores, rather than mail order. But hey...that's just me.
