Hello,

So I have unfortunately fallen trap to another normal issue that tC owners have to go through. My 3rd gear grinds when shifting into it and only has 97K miles.
I have been told by multiple mechanics and read in forums that the Synchro Rings go out in this model of tC.
Toyota wants to charge $4600 for a new transmission, but this issue will just happen again after 60K to 100K miles.

I have 1 mechanic who states they can rebuild my transmission for $1500 with a 1 year warranty and I have another mechanic that has stated he has rebuild Scion transmissions in the past,
only to have the issue come back and recommends having him find a low mileage transmission and replacing it. I am having trouble making a decision and was wondering if anyone can provide some insight.

I plan on taking my car in for repairs today.

Since no one has responded....here is my take...and you have probably already decided..

Spend the almost 5k, and know you might get a “new” transmission... them a-holes will overhaul it and you’ll have a rebuilt transmission. I speak from experience. If you can find a in the box new EB60 MT transmission, you have went far beyond Google. Also... rebuilding the inside gear-driven, synchro mesh shift abilities in these...isn’t that hard to do, a dude that can rebuild a manual transmission can handle this easy work.
