1. Jack up the car on stands
2. Find the bolt labeled " refer to owner's manual before refilling". it should be 22 or 23 mm i think
3. Once that drains out, put that bolt back on and lower the car down so its flat
4. Remove the battery and the platform holding it. this should make it easier to get to the giant 23 mm bolt which is the fill hole.this should face the radiator and sits higher than the drain plug.
I measured around 2.5 Qts out and it was overflowing as soon as i was around 2.4.
Tadaaaaa!
I used Redline 75w80 GL-4. I paid around $47 for it off eBay. the drive feels a little better. I am waiting for colder days to critic the oil thoroughly. I will post pics soon.
Thanks!

The swap is very similar to tC1. Can confirm.
These colder days are killing me going into second gear (with Redline). I thought about trying stock fluid again.
I'm curious what your results were with the Redline 75w80 GL-4 oil. I'm getting near to replacing my 2014 tC2 Tranny Oil and would greatly benefit from your experience.
Hey guys just some FYI's to this procedure and an update with the proper transmission fluid for this car.
*Both bolts are 24mm.
*Proper replacement fluid is Redline MT-LV, as the tC takes a GL4 Toyota LV (low viscosity) fluid. The 75w-80 used in the OP works but is not ideal. The Toyota fluid is actually a 75w85 but finding that in a GL4 is tricky. The MT-LV fits the bill.
Hope this helps someone, as it took me a while to find the info to choose the correct fluid for this car.
Should change the fluid every 30-60k depending on driving habits.
I had my local O’Reilly’s special order me some Redline 75W85 because of how unbearable the cold shifts are getting and I’m hoping to put it in this week so we’ll see how it goes.
Hey just did my clutch and read somewhere to fill up the fluid till it pours out. Now in this thread it mentions it is for a 1g and another thing is the location of the fill bolt is wrong. It's actually by the clutch cables facing the firewall. I'm a little frustrated because I've finished the clutch and the 2.6 qts of fluid is NOT pouring out and need to know if something is wrong because I have over 4 qts in fluid rn.... smh

How's it doing in the extreme cold? Lowest it gets in Phoenix is in the 30's and I haven't had any issues at all. Smooth has butter.

Provided you have a tC2, you aren't filling from the correct location. It's not near the clutch cables at all. The only hole near that location is where the shifter spring goes, which is NOT where you fill it. The fill hole is on the front of the transmission facing the radiator. My guess is you're severely overfilled and need to correct that immediately. Best idea would be to drain the transmission completely and then find the correct 24mm bolt on the front of the transmission and fill it up from there with fresh fluid.
Thanks for clearing that up Driz. It would've been nice if the person who posted that responded, but it's tough to find manners these days. I notice he joined to only post once, and then bailed. No respect.
Anyway, this is a good thread, cause finding any info on this 6 speed manual is almost impossible. All I needed to know is how many quarts to fill it, and here it is, I've been searching over 1/2 an hour, till I finally got my answer here. Plus a little extra, with the responses to the characteristics of using different oils, and the "correct" fill plug location.. Thanks again for posting.

Hey Joeq check out this post that Billashington made after I asked him to after we were going back and forth about it in a different thread: MT Fluid Guide w/ Pictures - Scionlife.com
Not sure if it's a sticky, it should be. Also the battery does not need to be removed.
To summarize though, grab 3q of Redline MT-LV and fill until it starts overflowing out of the fill hole. Should take ~2.3-2.5q of fluid.
I changed my daughters Scion fluid a few months back, to mainly check the oil for contamination, and went through this too. Hard time trying to find the quantity, and also saw the battery didn't need removing. Thanks for the link drizzy.
I want to add, I put in amsoil 75w-90 fluid, and it drove no different than 75w from Toyota, no notch, no anything. Would of never known a difference.
Not sure if 75w vs 75w-90 really makes much difference in our trans, I also read that the difference was to get higher mpg, I am unsure about that, because I was also getting 33-34mpg with amsoil same as oem.
The stock fluid is 75w LV (low viscosity). Closest aftermarket you can find is 75w85 which is the MT-LV (LiquiMoly also makes a 75w85). Some guys report that MT90 is notchy or grindy once the trans is hot, some don't. Might be a climate thing. Still too thick to run in this trans IMO.
Jealous af for that mpg though, I drive all city and get 22.5 with the tune (which brought it up from 21.5) lol.

That highway life, I sit at 70mph all day, city for 1% of the time. all OEM. I will be putting 75W when I get my clutch/rebuild done just for peace of mind. I was quoted 25 a pint or quart or whatever.
80 something for full fill. not too upset, but back when I did Amsoil, I did it thinking maybe thicker fluid would quiet down the supercharger of trans I had, no difference. but didn't hurt it either since it was already making noises.
I'm in Ohio, mid 90s, no difference in any shifting quality that I could perceive.

I've always liked AmsOil. The original, and only true synthetic oil out there. Can't say I've ever had a car worthy of it, or drove one long enuff to reap the benefits, but I know people who have used it extensively, and it is true to its promos.
Picked up a '14 tC for my son, want to help him chg the manual tran fluid.. how important is it to have the car level, does rear end need raised to match front end height?
Had planned to drive it up on ramps to drain and fill, is it filled from above thru engine compartment so that can have it off the ramps and level, or still have to get underneath to access filling?
I like the comment about the tranny sounding like a Supercharger, so does ours :/
