Default Second gear grind

Hey everyone Im new here but i am wondering if anyone else is having the problem I am with their 2011 tc. When its cold it grinds just a little bit in second. I realize this is pretty common in a lot of cars but not something I expected from a toyota. As soon as the car warms up it completely goes away and shifts like butter but its a little weird. Thanks.

its common, the first 5-10 minutes are usually a pain, but once the tranny fluid warms up should be fine, sometimes my third gear grinds in my 06 when i shift quickly, cause its not lubricated enough

I'm happy to know iM not the only one having this problem.
When the car is cold, 3rd gear is hard and will sometime grind.

I was surprised about it..never thought a new car would do that.

Mine is "smooth as butter" even when it's cold. But I live in Miami, so cold is mid 60's

If I were you, I would mention it at your first free service, at least you will have it on paper while under warranty in case it gets worse...

When i say cold, i mean between minus 31 and 25 degrees farenheit.
Miami is nothing cold compared to Canada.

But i will still mention it at the first maintenance

My 1st -> 2nd has a little bit of impact like if I'm not stepping on the clutch deep enough.
It ground a little bit once too.
2nd -> 3rd hardly has an impact.
3rd -> 4th, 4th -> 5th, and 5th -> 6th are perfectly smooth.
I'm thinking they will all get better since I only put 100 miles on it now.

I used to have similar impact with my other cars I used to have when I put the gear into reverse.
I used to put the gear into 4th (or sometimes 3rd) and then reverse to prevent this impact.
This car, on the other hand, has no impact putting into reverse, which is nice.

^It doesn't get better. Mine does it only when cold. Or should I say did. With the heavier TWM shift **** I have, I have yet to have the morning 1-2 grind. The added leverage was a huge bonus.

I forgot to mention that it does it even when it's not cold.
The temperature here is in 70's and it has impact even when the engine is warmed up.
It's weird because it only does that when I put the gear from 1st to 2nd.
Neutral to 2nd and 3rd to 2nd have no problem.
I wouldn't worry about it until I put 1000 miles on it, but this is bothering me every time I feel the impact.

that "clunk" from 1st to 2nd is not grinding and normal. my 06 did this and now my 11 does this. it has no audible grind, just the way the tranny is i guess. normal, at least for me.

That's nice to know.
It's true that it has no audible grind.
I sometimes feel vibration from the shift **** like it's grinding (during shifting from 1st to 2nd when the shifter is almost in the 2nd but not yet in).
The noise is "clunk" when the shifter just went in to 2nd.
It's weird. I've never experienced this on any other cars with manual transmission.
Did it get better over time on your 06?

hah, no it did not, BUT it did NOT get worse, I learned to live with the clunk. the vibration you feel right before you enter 2nd is familiar to me also, but as long as i shift smooth and quickly, I don't feel that vibration and the clunk is less noticeable. sometimes I don't even notice it. I'll start freaking out when i hear grinding coming from under the car..

I've been trying out things and I think I figured out how to prevent the painful noise going from the 1st to the 2nd gear.
When I pull the shifter from the 1st to the 2nd, I'm not supposed to pull it too much towards myself or away from myself.
It needs to be pulled just at the right angle.
I was pulling it too much toward myself and that's why it was making a painful noise.
It's been so smooth now that I got used to it.

As for the vibration, it happens only when I shift really slowly.
As long as I'm shifting normally, there is no vibration.

Same here tyap, I have been driving manual tranny cars for 17 years, I was starting to worry. Having the seat adjustd exactly to a certain spot for me helps tons. I am 5'10" and quickly realized I had to keep the seat and seat back up further than I am used to. I quit letting the wife drive it, tired of trying to find my sweet spot in the seat adjustment. lol
The colder weather seems to have a huge impact on mine as well. 30-40F weather it's a pain till it fully warms up. Above 60F, no problems. I just hit 1k on the OD. It seems to get better the more I drive it. Makes sence, it's just breaking in that's all.

Has anyone had any gears grind at the end of the throw? 4th gear was grinding for me this morning even with the clutch all the way to the floor and the shifter all the way in with no travel left. It was ~32°F outside when it happened.

My 2nd gear is fine. The only bummer with the shifting is the bizarre locking i get from time to time when shifting to 1st after a red light, or reversing.

It blocks me from getting in gear sometimes, and i have to release the clutch & press it again. Sometimes i need to let go of the brake for the car to ever-so-slightly roll in neutral, then try getting it in 1st/reverse again. Bizarre.

Will be getting the TWM bushings kit soon tho, maybe it'll feel different

I don't have the problem that VVTinme has.
But I have the exact same problem as Matariel.
It only happens a few times a week.
When it happens, the person behind me must be thinking I'm not paying attention to the signal light
