So anyway-

Can I just replace the 6x9's with some nice component ones?

Amazon.com: Polk Audio DB691 6-by-9-Inch 3-Way Speakers (Pair, Silver): Car Electronics Amazon.com: Polk Audio DB691 6-by-9-Inch 3-Way Speakers (Pair, Silver): Car Electronics

Is there some reason why it wouldn't work? Is the stock 6x9 just a woofer, and has a crossover somewhere that would make the new ones not work right? I'm really not trying to replace the head unit. I just want to replace the front door speakers and use the factory amp to power them.

Thoughts?

So if I put in those new 6x9's, the highs would be filtered out?

If they ( Toyota ) have made no changes to the audio system amp since sept 2010 when our car was built then I will say your amp is a band pass amp that plays from about 60 hz ( maybe ) up to 800/1000 hz range.

I can confirm this after putting a set of Focal's on the amp. straight midbass (its not even crossed over on the low end, only on the high end around 800-1000hz) Only way to get LFP is to do it on the head unit and no way to adjust the bandpass. the stock amp is pretty much useless.
