Default No cabin air filters recommended?

Hey all

I got a new TC and noticed there's no cabin air filter.

There's also no mention of one in the manual, just an empty slot (no retainer clip or anything).

What gives with this?

On another forum someone mentioned that they aren't recommended by Toyota, but I see no other mention of it anywhere.

I don't see why they would put a slot for one and not recommend it. It's just a way of making the car cheaper and giving the dealer something to sell I'd think. Can be pretty unhealthy to not have one depending on where u live. I live near a lot of farms and I definitely notice a massive difference not having one with the potent fertilizer stank this time of year. Not that it wasn't there in my civic but it was less potent. I'll definitely be getting one.

The dealer sells one, Fram also makes it.

Thanks all. Also live-chatted Scion and they said dealers sell one. I'll try that Fram filter since I'm sure the dealer one will be a ripoff. I guess it just slides in with no retainer clip or anything???

Hello all, I'm new here. Got a 2012 tC about a month ago. Checked the cabin air filter and found the slot empty, the tray is missing. I don't think the commercial filters will work without the tray. So I used the same solution as my old car. Its a washable/reusable furnace filter cut to fit. Cost about $10.00 at Walmart.

Pretty sure there's no "tray" really. As most other cars the cabin air filter just has a rubber lip around the edge and it just sits there. No latching or anything like that. There's no reason to clamp it down and air only comes in threw it not out. And if it were to come out somehow (never seen one come out) it wouldn't be detrimental to anything like a motors air filter.

I noticed the same thing. After my first free service the dealer mentioned to me that the next service includes a cabin air filter inspection and will be an extra $60 if it needs to be replaced. Probably going to just buy one and throw it in before that appointment.
