Default Scion tC 2G reliability - better info

I wanted more up-to-date car reliability information that included actual repair rates. So a few years ago I started getting people together to make this possible. TrueDelta now updates actual repair frequencies, not just dots, four times a year, to track cars closely as they age.

We've had good participation by Scion owners, with over 500 signed up. But the second-gen tC isn't yet in the survey, as more participants remain needed for this model. (Though the FR-S was introduced much more recently, we'll have some initial stats for it next month.)

Participants simply report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter.

To encourage participation, participants receive full access to all results, not just those for the tC, for free. Once we have them, I'll share results for the second-gen tC in this thread after each update.

For the details, and to sign up to help make this happen:

I think another contributer is the fact that the FR-S has a much higher percentage of actual car enthusiasts that own it. tC's are owned by young people (with a very high proportion of them being females) who just simply don't care about cars as much as your average FR-S owner.

Question- what kind of repairs are to be reported here? things like cracked windshields and chipped wheels due to tire blowouts don't count right? because they are up to chance and luck. just guessing.

I tried to update my info on your site. Unfortunately, i don't remember my password (how often do you need to log in and report repairs on a Toyota!). I requested a password unlock on your page, and it said an email was sent, but when it didn't come within a day or so, I. Forgot about it.

Correct, these wouldn't count, because they're beyond the control of the manufacturer.

Thanks for asking. Signing up with the 2014 would bring us closer to being able to include that model year.

Lol yea my TC2 has more TORQUE that that wimpy FRS dude. I'll take my launch over your 15-20 HP difference any day of the week. But I suppose more TC2s will be seeing more FRS's in their rear view. But props on that whole low center of gravity and balance thing. And I see way more females driving FRS's than TC2's.

I see a couple more females driving the frs than guys. They are both cool
Frs had 20more hp
20 less torq
High compression
Rear wheel drive
All while the tc is the opposite if I'm right.
Tc though weighs more, glass roof, roomy, more aggressive front. (In my eyes)

Neither car is a sports car, neither car is fast or impressive. They look nice and had a wonderful market campaign, hyped the frs to make it appear as some race car when it's not.

I like scion because it's comfortable dd nothing else, both cars look nice and get from point a to point b. I won't and will never race my tc because I'm embarrassed of it's hp but woman like the car and that's all that matters to me lol

Well, as far as reliability... It is a toyota motor. But, I just paid 7k for a new motor because my head gasket blew and my heads warped and so on... So for me.... Not so much. :/

Btw, I don't drive it like a mad man. Only time I open it up is on the road course or at an auto x.

How many miles were on it? Couldn't find a used one? I saw a 20k mile engine for 2200 a while back.

62k, and yeah I did get a used one w/37k on it. But, it was $4650.

Goodness that's cheap!

Damn. I'm at 113,390 and besides changing fluids and spark plugs I have had to change the water pump and brakes. Everything else is stock (besides any aftermarket crap I put on)

We recently updated stats for the first-gen tC, FR-S, and other Scions. These updated stats cover through June 2014, putting them about 14 months ahead of some others.

I'd love to have these for the second-gen tC, but same story as before: not enough cars ;(

The 2011 and 2012 both seem stuck at the halfway mark. I'd really like to include these in the survey (along with more recent years, but they're not as close).
