I put too much primer on my Fiber Glass hood lip! I sanded as much down as I could and was doing well till I did it again like an idiot. Now I have this ugly uneven area in the middle of the FG piece. I don't know what to do!?!?!?

I bought more primer spray and also a can of Bondo to fill the gaps if needed.

Any suggestions? Should I try and strip the entire thing and start over? If so what do I need to do that without damaging the Fiber Glass?

 

Bondo and Metal Glaze are your friends in this situation. You'll also need some sandpaper. 80grit to remove excess bondo, 180grit to start smoothing things out, then 220grit to prep for priming again. Any small imperfections of air bubbles fill with Metal Glaze and sand it just the same as the bondo but skip the 80grit and start with 180grit. Body work is a long arduous process...

 

LOL! I think it's why I mess up in the 1st place. I hate to work hard and overdue the primer out of wanting to "get it done" but it never fails that I screw it up that way and end up doing 200% more work than needed.

yes, I'm bringing the tools, I'll have to remeber to bring the right bolt size if it's 14 or below I have it in the car already. I'll be checking tomarrow.

 

I have a ratchet? set in the trunk. a whole bunch of add ons. It's cheap but it helped me get the hood on and the Progress sway bar.

I can even bring an electric drill if needed

 

a drill?? whyfor? I'm not putting any holes in that baby! We shouldn't need any power assist on the bolts and if your set worked then we should be good, I'll have mine just in case.

Ok all, I have painted the 2nd coat of Salsa Red and it's still not really as smooth as I would like it (but maybe ok to others). Should I sand again then put another coat before I use the clear?

 

put afew more coats of color on, then use a very fine sandpaper and wetsand it smooth. Clean and dry and then put afew coats of clear on wetsand again and then polish and wax. I believe that's how its done but confim that with someone with more painting experience than me.

I placed it on the hood for a sneak preview with the color on and WOW I can't wait to finish!

 

I could not help myself and had to take a couple of pics for a sneak peek before I did another sand/color and clear coat. Gotta let it sit for another 7days after the clear so I wanted to see it now before it becomes really shiny









I am still debating if I am gonna put my OEM hood back on and wait to buy a better CF hood since I am bothered by the fitment on the passengers side. Might just get another CF hood but this time Black/Grey but spend more $$ so it fits right. The next week or so will help me think about it while I wait for the clear coat to cure.

Thanks! I know right!?!? what a difference when putting on a piece of FG that really does not do anything. Maybe a Tini bit or Auro to it but no much.

I can still see some rough edges and such but I can also see the end of it after I follow your suggestions.

 

So did you and Psyco have any better luck on smoothing out the fitment, Infini? I'm guessing not because of your last post with the pics debating on whether to put the stocker back on.

 

well, the damned thing is warped, I thought it might have been an easy bolt adjustment. We saw another car with one and I think he's going to try some rubber and I had also suggested placing some washers behind the hinge to tilt it downward.
