Default Advice on Remote Start location and help with problems

I'm installing a remote start and I'm looking for advice on where to mount the unit. So far my best bet looks to be behind the steering wheel, but I really don't want to take apart my entire upper dash. I'm not against it I just don't have a garage and I'm doing this install in my apartments parking lot.

If anybody has any better ideas for a mount point I would love to hear them.

and please no suggestions to let a shop install it. I have tried and there are no shops in my area that will install a start on my car. (much to my annoyance)

i can't remember if you can do this with the xA/xB but when I would do installs for tCs I was able to get behind the steering wheel/gauges by going through the radio opening. I do have really thin arms though the area behind there is probably the best place...

I mounted my unit under the hood and I put the kill button inside the plastic fuse area inside my car by the steering wheel. My antenna is right behind my rear view mirror on the wind shield and the speaker is under the hood also above my grill.... Lemme know if you need specific areas.

Sounds good.
I dunno about putting the unit under my hood though, I get a lot of moisture where I am. I might try the space through the radio opening like tc4joe said. I can get back there with little problem. I don't have thin arms but I know people who do.

thanks for the help.

I just got done installing remote start, keyless entry on my car about two weeks ago. You will have to take the top part of the dash out to get to some wires. Its actually not as hard as it seems. I mounted the control unit way up in under the dash, nearest firewall - furthest left it could go. There is a body brace going in that general direction and I tied it up to that.

Yeah thats what I what I'm probably gonna end up doing anyway. The problem for me isn't taking apart the dash its what to do with it. I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building. and once its apart its like what? 12 to 15 pieces of dash to move around. I dunno I might just have to buy a large tailgating tent just to cover my car while I take all of this stuff apart. Eh Ill figure it out, I might just do it in parts.

You guys know it its still legal, or even do-able to drive this thing even if the dash isn't in it? (serious question)

I think no response means no problem. I drove with half of my dash a part with no problems. I too live in an apartment, know your pain. THe local advance auto store lets me use their lot.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I've already started to take my dash out piece by piece a day. It's been working for me so far. Although I do get weird looks from my coworkers when get in and ask where all of my trim is. I just laugh and tell them to hold on.

alright now I've got the thing pretty much installed.

But I have run into a problem. Everything works just fine (doors unlock/lock, horn works, etc) EXCEPT it wont turn on my car.

I've deduce that it's a problem with the wire for the Ignition Input of +12v. I'm at a loss here I can't figure out where the input should come from to run my starter kill/anti-grind. anything would be great.

(I'm thinking its a blue/white on the column but I don't know)

Yep got those.

I think the one I'm looking for is the W/B on the same harness, its a big mother but it's the only one with +12v constant during cranking/starting.

I'll find out tomorrow (hopefully with a good outcome)

no the other white/blue.
The one in the 1 spot on that connector, but your right there is a white/blue on that harness for Acc. (its in the 3 spot)
On second look at the electrical manual I think I'll try the black/yellow ignition first. The white/blue i'm thinking of is 50amp line.... o_O

Alright now I'm getting really frustrated.

The exact description for this wire is:
+12V Ignition Input. The Yellow wire must connect to a main ignition wire at the ignition harness. This wire must show +12V when the ignition is on and while cranking the starter. The voltage must not drop when the car is starting.

and I can not for the LIFE of me figure out where to splice it.
Everything I've tried so far has actually STOPPED the remote from doing anything the status light on the antenna doesn't even turn on. I am really, completely at a loss here.

For the love of all DIY please help.

You need to connect the +12V Ignition Input from the alarm onto the Black/Red wire.
There is a connection for a 2nd ignition on the alarm and that should go to the Black/Yellow wire.

If that doesn't work I'll tell you which wires need to get connected where tomorrow...I just have to find my install manual in the morning.

...oh and for the starter wire make sure:
starter wire on ignition harness is cut
green from alarm goes to key side
purple from alarm goes to starter side

let me know how that goes...

Well I put it to the black/red and got nothing. I mean the system still worked the car just wouldn't start.

I've already got the two main ignition output wires going to B/R and B/Y
This yellow one is to the smaller main harness not the larger starter harness. I really don't know why this isn't working.

to save time these are the wires on the main starter harness for the remote start and where I connected them:

Pin 1 RED WIRE A: Main Power Input A (+). Connect to the battery or constant power wire at the ignition switch with a minimum 30 Amp supply.
(connected to battery)

Pin 2 RED WIRE B: Main Power Input B (+). Connect to the battery or constant power wire at the ignition switch with a minimum 30 Amp supply.
(connected to 50amp blue/white line at ign harness)

Pin 3 BROWN WIRE: Second Ignition Output (+). The Brown wire provides +12V for a second ignition wire. This wire may instead be programmed for use as a second accessory or second starter wire.
(connected to black/red at ign harness)

Pin 4 ORANGE WIRE: Accessory Output (+). Connect to the accessory wire coming from the ignition switch that supplies power to the heater/air-conditioner. Some cars may have multiple accessory wires.
(connected to Blue/white Acc line)

Pin 5 YELLOW WIRE: Ignition Output (+). Connect to the main ignition wire that provides +12V when the ignition is on and while cranking the starter.
(connected to yellow/black at ign harness)

Pin 6 VIOLET WIRE: Starter Output (+). Connect to the the vehicle’s starter wire.
(connected to starter wire, black)

and the yellow 12v ign. input on the smaller harness is that I mentioned earlier.

all of the other's work so it makes me think I have done something wrong with these.

If you are sure you have all the wires connected in the right place try programming the remote start to function in "Tachless" mode.

Make sure your hoodpin is connected correctly...I did a couple of remote starts where the hoodpin wasn't contacting ground good enough, so the module thought that the hood was open.

Let me know how that goes...

I know it gets frustrating...but its all worth it in the end!
