AUX input for an Ipod
I finally got around to trying out the AUX input connector that is in between the two front seats and it doesn't appear to work with my iPod. I used a cable that I have lying around with stereo male plugs on both end. Both male plugs look identical and they look like the same plug that is on the headphones that are normally plugged into the iPod.
Is it possible that the shape of the plug on this cable is not what should be plugged into the AUX input and maybe that is the reason why I am not hearing anything when I set the Radio to AUX? Are you supposed to use some special connector for the AUX input? It feels like the plug is going all the way in to the socket.
Otherwise I have no idea why it shouldn't work. I can see the iPod playing when I look at the iPod screen but I hear nothing coming from the speakers. -- the radio and CD player work fine.

We use our Ipod Nano in our 2006 xA and that is how we connect it. The sound doesn't come out of all of the speakers because it's not stereo but it's loud and clear enough to listen to. It beats spending a few hundred on the actual Ipod connector for the Scion.
The one thing is you might check is the Ipod volume. It has to be all the way up so that you don't have to turn the car stereo volume very high. Just yesterday we played the Ipod and I had turned the car stereo up past 40 and could barely hear it, before realizing the Ipod volume was way down.

Thanks for the detailed info about taking the panel off. I might try it. My skill with prying off plastic parts on other things I repair is not good and I often mar them (although I always get stuff back together sort of) and its my wife's car!
We bought the car used with 7,000 miles on it a few months ago and just got around to checking out the AUX input recently. Is it also just as possible that the connector between the seats is not connected at the connector? How is the wiring from the connector to the radio connected to the connector recepticle? Maybe it is unattached there. Or maybe I'm using a bad cable. I need to do a bit more trouble-shooting before I pull off parts from the center console.

reg...get you a flat screw driver and wrap the tip in electrical tape to pry with.....less chance of damaging the plastic....
And always pry from the bottom, it's harder to see any scars..

I'd be certain that you have it connected right before prying off any panels. As someone suggested, make sure you have the volume of the iPod set fairly high. I doubt there is a problem with the connection, but if you are sure the iPod volume is not too low and you are sure the cable you are using works, I'd take it to the dealership. Let them test it out and fix it if necessary. You said you bought it a few months ago with 7,000 miles, so it is still under warranty.
Someone said the iPod wouldn't play out of all of the speakers when connected through the AUX input. That isn't true. It will play out of all of the speakers. The AUX connection is stereo. The iPod stereo option is great for convenience (automatically shuts off the iPod and the iPod volume doesn't matter), but the AUX input will work fine.
