To care, or not to care..that is the question

Perhaps I don't. Why don't you enlighten me? How is a very nice, solidly built, $13K economy car a "cult icon" or a status worth worrying about so much?
Me, personally, I'd rather devote my energies to something worthwhile, i.e., my career, politics, global warming, global starvation, AIDS, Cancer, any number of things. Why again is this $13K car so important? I'd really love to know if you can explain it to me.
A Ferrari, a Lamborghini, etc. I can understand. A Scion? Pleaaaaase.
It's the nicest thing for what it is that I konw of. Anything more than that, you are right, I don't understand.
So hopefully you can eloquently elaborate and explain it to me.
Doberman, you are right....it is just a $13K econo car. But the VW Bug was a cheap econo car in it's day, and it became a lot more than that....taking on a life of it's own.
Now, the xA is, by no means, the icon that the Bug was/is....and never will be. But for reasons that are hard to define, a large percentage of people have some sort of emotional attachment to their Scions. The fact that the xA is a cheap little econo car with not much power just proves that it has some kind of "pull" that draws their owners in. Really that's no different than any other car. There are web communties dedicated to almost all make and models. I'm sure those folks feel the same about their particular vehicle has we do ours.
It's not entirely fair to come here and expect to find people who don't enjoy their cars. That's most of the reason sites like this exist. People who see their car only as an appliance are probably few and far between around here.
BTW, I'm 38 years old, married with a kid. My family, friends and job always come before my car. However, my xA is still very important to me. I enjoy it a great deal. I say that only to fend off your implication that some of us may not have our priorities straight.

You are right its just a car but some of us take pride in it more than others. I will quote the line from the Fonz in Happy Days "So I suppose your mom was just a mom".
To each their own. So far i've only heard praise for my xA, especially the 6-12 year old kids who I teach on the side. A few of them can't wait to get their license so they can drive my xA.
personally I don't like the how the xa looks, but I also think, if your happy with it, ignore them, if they keep bugging you, accidently run over there foot when you drive off, I know alot of people that hate the xbs, I got mine because I liked the looks
I have gotten so many compliments on my car. The funny thing is that most people who say something don't know what kind of car it is. Living in the Detroit area, that can be a good thing.
When I go up north in Michigan, it is like the batmobile has just rolled in.
"What the hell IS that thing"?
Mine is lowered and the windows are dark. Oh, it also has 17" wheels. Do that so you smile when you walk out to the parking lot and forget what the douchebags have to say. Do you listen to them about other things?

I have the same problem my best friend is an xterra driver, and hes like well, its alright. But when i picked it up my moms best friend laughed at it and said "i could fit that in the back of my durrango" until he walked up to it and was like wow this is really a beautiful color and look at all the detail, i like it. then i laughed!
who cares what they think. build it for yourself, and your pride will show.
as for the comment in an earlier post about there not being much "competition" in the xa class. i think that we have great competiton in the xa class here in the great lakes.(mi,chi, indy) we have some of the best xa's around. we may not have the xb and tc numbers, but who needs numbers to win

Wow, I’m shocked that some people apparently think the xA is ugly. It was the look of the xA that got me to buy one. I had my money down on a Yaris LB - now THERE’S a funny looking ride - but when I found out that they are basically the same car underneath I went for the cool looking car! So don’t worry about the xA, as Toyota’s Yaris sales climb it will become the ugly duckling on the road… and don’t forget there are still plenty of Echos (Echoes?) still on the road!
