Default The dreaded P0012 Code..

Wife has an 04 xA, with i think about 82000 miles. while i was out of town last week, she said the CEL came on, so I told her to go by Autozone to get the code read. well, she said it went off the next day before she had a chance to go, so never did.

Well I took it up there now that I'm back home and the P0012 code was stored in the computer. after searching around on here, it seems to frequently point to the cam gear, VVTI assembly thing. some posts indicated that their light would come on,
then go off again, maybe a few times, only to come back on again later for good.

My question is, is that pretty certain what the problem is (meaning the cam gear)? i saw links to a TSB but it only applied to 05-06 xA/xB. i know the car is long out of warranty anyway, so it looks like whatever the problem is will have to be fixed out of pocket
- I'd just like to know where to start.

Thanks!

you can do timing yourself on anything. its all about following directions. and you can get a new motor pretty cheap for these cars if you mess something up.

600 bucks with around 40k for just the block.

Look up on ebay for 1nz-fe. Yaris, echo, xb, xa. Just if you get it from a yaris or echo keep the intake mani and exhaust from your car and just put the "new" motor in
