Illegal Air Intake System and a Smog Check
Hi! Been a proud co-owner of a Manual 2005 Scion XA since 2021. This website has been helpful, and I wanted to start posting.
Our current dilemma is that the air intake system PTS26-52040 CARB # D-392-19 is only legal on 2004 Scion XAs. Any insight on why that is, as they are very similar to 2005, would be appreciated as I am curious.
Registration is due, and it needs a smog check. With an intake system I know will fail, here is our plan:
We got a stock air intake system from the scrapyard for $52.50. We plan to replace the modified intake system with the stock one. We have not done this before so any tips and tricks would be appreciated. We just finished replacing the clutch in October, so this should be light work compared to that. I have seen on ScionLife that some people put the stock on to pass smog, then put the modified back on. Thoughts on doing this? I have read that the cold air intake helps with performance and gas mileage. In this economy, I would like to keep my gas cost as low as possible.
Will keep this thread updated.
