Looks like someone overtightened the oil filter, causing the block to break!...

How is this even possible? Did you hit something, causing that to happen?

I was driving back home to Orlando from Miami. Half way up on the turnpike, boom! Look in the rear view mirror and saw white smoke, along with a chunk of my block+oil filter fly out from under the car. I pulled over, saw a puddle of oil and ran to retrieve whatever came off my car. Had my dad meet me up, a friend stopped by on his way back to Orlando, and my uncle came up with his truck+trailer. Now I have to figure out what I'm going to do with it...new (to me) engine? 1zz or 4ag swap? :X Ugh I'm not completely sure what happened. I had gotten an oil change at Courtesy Toyota in Orlando a few days before my trip to SoFla. I don't think it was anything the oil-tech did. Though, they'll be hearing from me if I find out they fubared something. *cries*

Its not just the oil filter but a part of the engine block attached to it, if you look at the pics you will see the engine block.

Nope, I was going 70-80mph in 5th gear (<4000rpm). I don't think I hit anything on the road, either... I did suspect something was wrong for the past month or so. Though, I had been riding my motorcycle a bit more because of the good weather. Friends were saying it was psychological because my bike's acceleration is much faster than my car... My bike is about the same horse power minus a ton of weight (literally).

could have been a bad casting of the block. that does suck it could be a warranty thing depending on your mileage. otherwise you pretty much need a whole new engine.

If you look at the part that's dark colored, that's the part that faces the inside of the block.
Looks like something hit it cause there are 2 marks on it. Maybe that was caused when it hit the road?
I really think something major happened inside of the engine, causing that portion to blow off!

I've seen it at the dealership I work at...

Wow, I am speechless. Before I traded my old xa I was horsing around and missed a shift and from that point it seemed to have less power int he power band area and made a real noticable rumble, but the oem muffler silenced that.

Man, I guess what someone else said was true, teh dealer tightened the oil filter soo much it cracked the block.

i don't need to worry about somethin hitting the oil filter form the outside - i have the beatrush underpanel protecting my engine block. this should be a priority investment for any xa owner that doesn't have one yet.
