I think it might be the starter cuz it makes a nasty grinding noise when i turn the key.

Yesterday i had the front of the car jacked up in the front to take off one of the struts to fix the gasket and i also took off my strut bars so i can paint them. When i finished, i put everything back where it was before and i didnt have any leftover screws or anything.

Then this morning my brother was gonna borrow my car and when he tried to start it, it wouldnt start at all, it would just make the grinding noise. I didnt even mess with any engine components so i have no idea.


Has anybody ever heard of this problem before?

EDIT: I am a retard. Turns out the battery was almost dead. I hooked up my battery charger just in case and it started right up. I have never run into that problem where something is grinding loud when the battery is dying.

Well thats what happened. the engine wouldnt even turn over it would just grind. Im more than sure that was the starter so if that happens again ima take the starter off and check that out. but now it runs fine.

 

How would it be the starter? If it happens again you have a short somewhere, most likely caused when you were working on it. Like duck said, it clicks it doesn't grind, that's how you know it's the battery.

 

yea i know how it sounds when its the battery. and like i said i didnt mess with any engine components, the only thing i disconnected was the wire for the windshield wiper but i put that back. but something was grinding, then later when i tried starting it again the engine tried to turn for a second then started grinding again. so thats when i hooked up the battery charger and it started right up with no problem.
When i was working on it the day before i had my cd's playing for a while so that explains why the battery was dying.

I have no clue as to why it was doing that but everything is fine now so ima just forget about it and if it comes up again ima figure it out.

 

i'm not allowed to post yet because i just signed up 10 minutes ago, so i hope you don't mind me running a likely battery related problem by? car won't start, all lights working fine. i hooked up my portable charger to the battery, as i've done before, and the clicking just increased; car still didnt start.

the battery could use replacing, but if all the lights and few bells and whistles are strong, wouldn't that indicate a different problem, e.g., the starter?

 

rather than scratching head, test and measure to come up with numbers. These numbers can help remote people who aren't there to help understand situtation.

1. measure battery voltage with everything off. volts = ??

2. measure battery voltage while cranking (or clicking). Volts = ??


Leave charger on battery for couple hours before trying again. If this portable-charger is jumper-pack with its own battery, it needs to be fully-charged before using it to try
and charge car's battery.

 

Our would not start. My sister in law started it while I hit the starter with a wooden stick.
R and R the starter it has 100k plus.

 

I’ve watched a few mechanics hit the starter with a hammer to get the starter freed up enough to start and drive into the engine bay to replace the starter.
