Default Scion xA automatic transmission problem

I have a 2006 Scion xA, and my husband believes the transmission fluid level is low, based on the way it drives. At one time, he owned his own repair shop, so I tend to take his word for it. The manual doesn't even mention transmissions or ATF levels. I read on another post that it takes about four bottles/qts of fluid--is that correct? Also, the post indicated that the tranny dip stick is red vs. the oil dipper, which is green.

Do the marks on the dipstick go by quarts or by pints?

There are COLD mark and HOT mark, check fluid accordingly to transmission temps.
Good luck.
