Default Towing with an Xa

Hey all,
I'm getting an Xa next week and want to tow a small boat & trailer. The total weight is around 500 to 600 lbs. And I'll be driving about 30/40 miles one way. Does anyone know if the Xa is capable of that. Everything I've read says that towing is not recommended. Thanks

I haven't the foggiest idea. I think the majority of us here in the tC section drive tCs for some odd reason?

Rise and shine you sarcastic son of a B

He asked in the tC section because he knows that a tC will be towing the xA.
C'mon, you had to know that.

Actually, when I made the post I thought I had chosen the Xa section for the post so not sure why it's in here, but thanks for the replies anyways.

See numerous posts in xB section. These cars are not made to tow and before others start, you might be able to get away with bike carriers and very light towing, but I wouldn't try anything over 200lbs. If your towing all the weight is concentrated on the back of the unibody, not over the axles like the vehicle is designed for.

^^^^ Ditto. The xA and xB just aren't meant to be towing vehicles. They're commuters.

A base model Tacoma would be more ideal for light towing.

Actually we got a box that pulls his own boat to the gulf. So it is possible but it will completly void your warranty. He was is done to where he can bolt on the hitch on unbolt it. Only problem hes had is that when he dumps the xb the ball mount drags the ground.

Alright folks, the trailer hitch for the xA is out and ready!!! I just had mine installed today at noon central time. Cost is $157.75 + 34 to have it installed (without wiring for a trailer). I could've installed it myself, but just got too excited to see it installed . I'll be pulling a small trailer (approx 400lbs) with 1 sportbike (420lbs wet weight) , riding gear and misc. equipment (60lbs.) along with myself (190lbs) for 1.5hrs one way, mostly staright, flat highways.

Just to let everyone know, it is a bolt-on install, no cutting, welding, tapping or the like. The hitch is so inconspicuous, hardly noticeable at all. Hitch rated at 2000lbs. max.. Don't know about the car though ;).

Here are pertinent info. to help you guys out:

Hitch Manufacturer: Da Lan (sister comp. of Curt mfg.)
Part#: 247488
Price: $157.75

Houston, Tx. Local dealer: Master Hitch (713)9744440. (they have one left as of 5/10/05)

I am not affiliated with any of the above businesses, I just want to make it easier for other members to get a hold of an awesome hitch for the xA.

I can e-mail a pic to someone who can post a pic, since I don't know how to, hehehe.

I will let you know how my towingwith the xA works out monday evening after coming from the track.

So far so good number crunching for the total weight (1000lbs.) the car will be "carrying". I attached the trailer yesterday and the rear suspension dropped aprrox an inch with the tongue weight of 190lbs. I feel confident that the car will be able to handle the load, be it at a slower pace.

I had Master Hitch wire-in the lights for the trailer yesterday and I was very pleased with how clean and professional the connections were. The only draw-back is that the wire will be coming out of the rear hatch dangling, so I plan on putting black duct tape over the wires so it will not flop around and get a chance to scratch the bumper.

Just provide your e-mail addy and I'll shoot you a pic of the hitch installed.

BTW, Tow at your own risk, I know I'll be Good luck :D

That's nearly half the weight of the car itself, plus drag.
You're risking alot.
It's a 1.5 and the body isn't made for towing.
Yes you found that someone made the part for it. That doesn't make it right.

Bleh. Your car, not mine, thank god.

FYI to those that are interested. I towed the trailer and bike with all my riding gear plus another passenger that weighs 140lbs around the neighborhood, sort of like a dry-run. The car can haul everything no problem but it does feel the added weight both in acceleration and braking. No different than having five adults and some equipment weight inside the vehicle.

I will be driving by myself, so the actual weight the car will be towing will be 140lbs. less tom..

jeff1960- In response to your original post, I believe the xA will be able to haul a SINGLE 3 seater jetski with no problem. You do have to take in to consideration the weight of other passengers (if any) that will be riding with you in the car. Good luck.

BTW, as eloquently stated by one of the forum members, "your car, not mine.", tow at your own risk

the xA is slow enough as it is, towing is not recommended.

I don't think it is safe to tow things with the xA. I would not recommend it.

I'm an xB guy myself and do tow a small boat with it. Wouldn't want to tow anything much bigger, but it works fine. I mostly use it for carrying bikes. I don't know why the tC and xA would handle any different

When I bought mine I did notice they had them for the tC and the xA as well.

It doesn't void your warranty. Only way is if it actually causes too much stress and is a direct cause of a malfunction.
