Default Air filter& Power

Would it effect my performance if I replaced the stock air filter with an aftermarket one such as a K&N filter. If so roughly how much of achange would it be?

I don't think you gain a thing. This is my opinion. The engine is designed for power and ecnomy in a small package. A restrictive air cleaner design would -be stupid- for Toyota to put on this engine.

"sell the sizzle, not the steak" is how all aftermarket parts makers -must- market their goods. K&N is an excellent, respected company with fine filters. But is an aftermarket filter system reallly any better than stock?

I have not seen dyno tests nor a/b comparisons. Who has? Word of mouth subjective judgements do not count for much more than mental excitements.

Damn! Wish I had said that

I just bought a K&N Aitfilter for my xb... not for power but because it will be ultimately cheaper than buying and throwing away the origional paper style elements.

That thread is for whole intake setups, not drop-in filters for the stock box. I've seen subjective reviews of those but nothing proven.

with scions, it's not always about perfomance. it's about performance look. visual excitment.

Yes, we love the looks and we love to pour money into our cars' appearance items. That's ONE thing, this emotional impact and so on.

It's another thing to "justify" the expenses by believing advertiser's promises and users' -subjective- claims "oooh its so much better now!".

Sellers do ovestate and users do suffer the Placebo Effect (I know, I've had that many times, myself!)

That said, and before this thread gets too far off-topic, I have a speed secret (ha ha)

I will be speeding along faster than any of you here, very shortly, without touching a thing under the hood.

I'm putting on faster tires later this week

To think that Toyota only uses the best of everything is a stretch. There is always a balance point between best price and best quality.

One of the other selling points of a car is cost of maintenance. Cheap disposable filter or quality reusable? Which one fits the scenario better? Many people wouldn't take the time to clean a reusable filter anyway.
