Default any tranismission gooroos?

i need some information on how to change a Straight Cut Dog Geared tranny into the closest thing to a sequential tranny.

i know you need a "strain gauge" and a compatible standalone that can be programed to send and receive info on flat shifting or something like and ignition cut off from receiving signal from the strain gauge.

the problem i'm running into is that i don't recall any strain gauge available for this kind of setup. also, for the standalone ECU i'm using, i'm not sure if it has that ability. it's AEM's universal fully programmable standalone ECU and it's one of only a couple standalones that work properly with the 3SGTE engine.

can anyone help me out a bit with this? Tony from Fensport in the UK has been helping me out a bit but he doesn't know anything else other then the standalone must be able to accept flat shifting and input signal from a strain gauge.

any help would be greatly appreciated

Quaife comes to no use for me. the only thing they offer for me is a straight cut gear set and has no option for dog engagement gearing over the use of syncros.

Fensport's kit comes with Input shaft, output shaft, all gears straight cut dog engagemnet, oil pump gear and straight cut crown wheel and pinion with the following ratios:

1st Gear 3.583
2nd Gear 2.045
3rd Gear 1.333
4th Gear 0.972
5th Gear 0.731
Reverse 3.545
3.933 Final drive

in other words, at 8,000rpm in 5th gear gives 200mph. not that top speed is what i'm looking for but it's much stronger and is almost all i need except that the strain gauge and compatible ECU. in other words, similar to this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=08QwRfwYnVo

video is of a RX7 FD using a straight cut dog gear kit from PPG. with a strain gauge, setups like this with a strain gauge allows you to go up in your gears from 1st to 2nd and 3rd and so on without the need of the using the clutch while down shifting will still need clutch work unless you can program the ECU to hold ignition while in between gears for a clutchless down shift. just need to know about the strain gauge and how it works and what to do with it.

Only guys I know running dog box transmissions are Subaru owners... might want to talk to some of them if you know any.... You're box is going to sound like an F-1 car with a gearbox like this.

Not anywhere super quick.... It'll depend on how sick this MR2 swap he's talking about doing is, and what it'll be used for. I'm just trying to figure out... Why so much custom fab work in a box? It makes no sense. I love my car as much as the next guy, but I wouldn't want 250+ awd hp in a box... I'd rather just have 200 - 250 rwd hp in an MR2... probably cost less!

not an mr2 swap, it's an ST185 swap.

technically speaking though, with gearing like that i would actually be accelerating fast then an actual ST185 celica being after the swap is done the xB would still weight about 200-300lbs lighter and thus slightly quicker movement.

as for the swap goes, it's not that much work. everyone keeps saying that the 3SGTE is such a huge engine and this and that and blah blah blah. it's addons is what makes it "look" so big, mainly the intake mani and plenum. the only real work needed is custom sub frames, the drive shaft to be cut down by about an inch and the fire wall would need some pounding in a couple spots. big freakin deal...

power wise is aimed more towards 400hp at the wheels. the gearing on the tranny just so happens to give for extreme high speeds. i'm in the middle of talking to Tony from fensport at the moment to see if i can't get a shorter final drive if they have one available and make the top speed at 8,000rpm to be lower around 175mph to improve acceleration.

i've been noticing alot of subys with these kits but i haven't seen many with a strain gauge making it capable of up shifting without the use of the clutch. that's my downer...

actually going and checking the gear ratios. this gear kit wouldn't be much different from the stock gearing. because i will only have a red line around 7,000-7,500 rpm, i wouldn't be seeing much change in top end at all. top speed at that point would go from stock 161mph to 175mph which is perfect either way. the gear set is just much stronger and gives use for instant gear shifting similar to a sequential. otherwise it's about the same.

Default um

3SGTE is an MR2 motor as well as a celica motor... MR2 would still have you in the power to weight ratio... Seriously... it be cheaper to get an MR2... But, have fun with the swap. It will be unique, and one of a kind for sure.
