Default auto transmission performance

I have an 06 xB automatic and I'v noticed that when it shifts from 3rd to 4th (od on) the last gear seems to have two steps where my rpms drop then a moment later they drop a little more. The other thing that is strange w/ my auto is at approx. 40 mph going down hill and breaking the transmission downshifts and my rpms jump. Never had another auto trans downshift for me. Anybody else with this concern?

As far as "two steps"- thats the torque converter locking up for 0 slip. When it locks up, maximum effeciency is achieved. Lockable torque converter is a great thing to have!

That just the tranny they used in the first gens. Supposed to prevent you from beating the snot out of the car and such. There have been a couple times where my tranny down shifts while going up an inclide and doesnt want to upshift to save its little life. Nothing like driving up a long bridge and you car sounding like its about to blow up at 3,500+ RPMs

If your going down a hill, and you use the brake, the computer will downshift the trans to help with the engine breaking. Dont use the brake, and it wont happen.

i drove from indiana to vegas for the scion event and let me tell you. the xb tranny sux for high speeds. going throug colorado was absolutely ridiculous. the thing hated 4th gear. my buddy floored the thing going up hill and it stayed at 5k until he hit the apex, which it then shifted to go down hill. not fun. it sounded like a lawn mower man. ugh.

not to rant, but does no one read the owners manual or features? the automatic tranny in an xb is a "smart" tranny, if your going downhill, it senses that and downshifts so it will engine break and save your brakes, if your going uphill, it downshifts so your not lugging the motor and burning things up or fouling plugs. if you really want it to stop, when your doin either, play with overdrive button a little, itll upshift, and if it doesnt owel, put better fluid in tranny, and start shifting it like a manual tranny, itll remember that you do this, and be much more likely to listen to you when you turn on and then off the overdrive. works for me
