Borla vs. TRD
I have the Borla axle back and love it. The GF has a 1st gen Strup axle back and i think its too buzzy at cruising speeds. Anyone out there want to shed some light on the TRD and how it sounds over all?
I kind of like my Strup V2 coupled with my Weapon-R 4-2-1 header. It sounds mean and grumbly for a 4 cyl. Cruising speeds aren't much of a problem either. Of course I've deadened the carp out of my trunk and added much polyfil to help eliminate the cruising tones. The TRD exhaust looks good and gives it a little louder tone over stock... not overbearing though. If you are going for looks and sound, the TRD is good.
My recommendation, keep the Strup and have a resonator installed mid exhaust. That will tone it down a bit more.
Any other drivetrain mods on the GFs box?

At idle and under gentle driving and shifting, the car does not stand out from others.
There is a range of resonance under load between 2000 and 3000 rpm. I used to shift with light load at 2000 rpm, but after putting on the TRD, I like to shift with some load up in the resonant range. Such driving by the sound of the pipe is more enjoyable but not as economical.
In the summer, with all the windows down and the Webasto moonroof open, the sound is immediate and exciting, particularly when the resonant range is confined by an overpass above or barrier to the right side. In cool weather with the car closed up, the sound is muffled and distant.
Because the resonant range ends at 3000 rpm, the resonance fades after 60 mph in 5th, so there is no objectionable droning at Interstate cruising speeds. There is only a faint snarl, coming as much from the engine as the exhaust.
There may be a small power increase from the TRD muffler, but not that I can notice.
I guess i should have added that i know there are no considerable HP gains from using an axle back set up. And i didnt start this thread to entertain a VS. dicussion, but if it amuses you .. who am i say anything .
It used to be; and i have looked, that Borla used to make the TRD exchausts. I was also looking to see if anyone would mention this with out me saying anything.

She has a Strup header with the 1st gen axle back. I believe that the 1st gen was tuned differently, and is considerably noisey over the 2nd gen Strup. In any case, she has been complaining about it for a couple years now, and loves how mine isnt as noisey as hers.
Thanks for the info tho.
I put a TRD on my 2006 last summer, after finding that the price had dropped to $187. The TRD is almost identical in size and reverse flow design to the stock muffler, but is in shiny stainless steel. The sound is just right for me, not too loud.

I didnt know that TRD has dropped the price! There are several on Ebay going for the $350 +/- .. just like it has been for years! There is one seller though, who is a Scion stealership. I thought they were off the truck specials that someone was making a buck off of. This is good info.
The GF doesnt beat on the box now, so the tone should be just right. Me personally, i hate driving hers vs. mine cause hers is so noisey. Hers is also an auto, which will also help with the tune of the muffler.
Can i just tell you how jealous i am that you have the Webasto roof on yours. Do they still make them; i heard they dont, and did you do the install yourself?
TY again for all the info.
I have the TRD on my 2004 xB auto and it is a very mild exhaust. When you are just cruising around town the only time it gets somewhat loud is whenever you get on it, but even then its nothing unbearable. The only thing about driving at highway speeds is that there is some drone, but what can you expect whenever you are going about 70mph at 3k.
The 5-speed is geared lower, and 70 mph is 3500 rpm. That is above the resonant range of 2000-3000 rpm. With the TRD on my 5-speed, the droning fades away after 60 mph (3000 rpm).
Webasto has a site at http://www.webastoshowroom.com/index.html. I thought they had dropped the folding canvas sunroof for the old xB, but now see it there. And I don't see my sliding glass moonroof any more. The install is much too critical and complicated for any owner. I had mine installed by a Webasto dealer here who does them constantly.
