caliper noise?
I have a 2006 xb with 21000 miles on it. I have it at the dealership this week do to a noise i hear in reverse when i am parking. It is like right before it comes to a complete stop ,it clunks! The service guy tells me it is a caliper noise and that they all do this after the breakin. Just would like to know if this is what i have to live with or is there another problem or something else to check?
i have something like that.. not just in reverse. even when im going forward.. i press the brake and i hear 1 "clunk" noise from the brakes.. every time i press the brake pedal .. only 1 clunk...
one tech guy told me the brake pad is moving in the housing or what.. it might be because i have aftermarket brake pads.........
another tech told me:
put grease one that little metal part on the outside of the caliper ( i dont know how its called) it might be my problem beacue i wanted to clean my painted calipers and i put a LOT of wd40 on it.. so it might be washed out the grease.. who knows..

I was gonna say maybe you have a rock in there somewhere, because that happens a lot with tegs, but I don't know the frequency of this problem in scions....sounds kinda odd still to me

Here is an explanation of a phenomenom known as "pad walking", see if this relates to your noise. Lets say you drive onto your driveway or into you garage, then stop, obviously the next time you go out, you will go in the opposite direction, lets say reverse, when you reverse out then stop, & you hear a clunk from the front brakes, thats "pad walking". Now you have reversed out of the driveway, you now go forward. Lets say you come to your first stop sign or traffic light, you stop & hear a clunk from the front brakes, "pad walking". You continue to drive with no other occurance, until you move the vehicle in reverse a again, then noise comes back. This is a normal condition, it is most noticeable with automatic vehicles, also with aftermarket pads, & definitely once the vehicle has sat for a long time.
The cause is simply the pad moving up or down in the caliper bracket, hence "pad walking". Some lube on the ends of the pads (copper lube) & under the fitting kit (the little metal clips the pads fit into) & the noise should be reduced or eliminated.

first of all:
if i pump my brake pedal while going forward i can hear that noise evert time when i press my break.. so its not just moving once forward then backward....
my problem is a little bit different.. but i do have aftermarket brake pad and i do missing a lot of lube from the calipers...
by any chance could you make some photo where should i put lube on the caliper?
That also happens alot with rear drum brakes especially if you set the parking brake (just like supposed to). I dont pay attention to that cuz its pretty normal. For the front brakes its important to have all the surfaces that come in contact with each other to be clean of dust and corrosion. That should be done when replacing front pads. Doing the brakes is more than just throwing some pads on. If the pads have any spring clips that hold them in calipers i usually bend them a little so they are tighter to have a pad "walk" less.
I know this is an old post, but I brought my xA in for a similar issue. I was told the brakes are fine but I need a "shim kit" plus install for $200.
What shocks me is that this is not covered under the 3/36 warranty to begin with.

holy crap i've been looking for this thread. i'm having this same issue when going forwards trying to slowly break. but if i slam on the breaks or put them on pretty decently on pressure it's occuring. still have factory pads n calipers. any suggestions? (this is for a tc though)
got that exact prob...a friend of mine working at the TOY dealer showed me just the little off set of the aftermarket pads. They're just barely the size of the OEMs, and yea that it does a little "pad walking". Sucks! Those clicks come up every now and then but it's freakn' LOUD! Now i'm facing a stupid clicking noise and a bad axle bearing grind.
