Dead Scion by the Road--Mine
My precious 2005 xb died yesterday, in the line of duty. Seemed to happen suddenly. There was a sound, I can't remember exactly, a feel like I had a sudden flat, even the sound of what I thought to be a flat. I pulled into a business, along a country road. No flat. I thought "Good!" But then it wouldn't start until the third try. Then horrific vibrations that became pronounced when I put it in reverse. I thought "This can't be good." and shut it down. But I was way way out, and what was I going to do, so I started it up and it drove. I got a few hundred feet, violent vibrations, some noises, jerks, and three warning lights on the dash came on: VSC, Trac OFF, and Check Engine. Well I didn't know what to do. I had to leave it and hitch a ride home with a stranger. It got towed to a shop and now the shop is telling for starters a coil pack is blown. That part will come Monday but there must something besides ignition to cause vibration and all those sudden codes, right?
I love my Scion. It's a working car with 130K on it, no problems so far, even with all those miles, except broken windshields and the back hatch lever broke off immediately being basically for looks. Then there's some issue and has been all the time I've had it with the gas tank neck being not quite the right fit for most gas station pumps. But as for anything else, I've been happy as a clam with my scion xb. I'm on a budget you might say, a real tight one, no coverage left of anything, except of course I pay liability insurance. And I love my Scion. It has done the work of a pickup only much better and far more stylish. You might freak out if you knew what I haul in that car, day in, day out, and how many little liives that Scion has saved with me.

With one coil pack out the motor was running with three cylinders, that will actually cause a lot of vibration. Your description describes what would happen if a coil pack went out. Good luck and give me an update when you attempt the repair.
I wouldn't worry yet. A bad coil pack could cause misfiring, and a 4 cylinder engine firing on only three cylinders is going to feel just as bad as you described. A coil pack is one of the least serious possible causes for violent vibrations.
Hey, thanks for those comments. I am already feeling much better about things, if it's just going to be that. That is good. I do love my Scion very much. It's been the best car, great mileage, comfortable and no big problems until this, so I've been very grateful this car came along.
