Excessive drivetrain noise anyone???
ok, I dont know if I am being paranoid or not, but I have about 27K on my 05 xB now and it seems as if I am getting more drivetrain noise than I would prefer/remember having.
Like say, short shifting into 2nd and not neccesarilly lugging it, but not pushing it up past 2500 or 3K, letting it PULL the RPMs up. it just seems like I can hear the gears meshing more than I should - could it be that the tranny fluid is spent? I'm lookin at the 30K service coming up, and I would assume that's something they would check at that time...
Also, at speed on the freeway, lets say at 70-75 cruising, then floor it and accelerate up to 80-85 (or whenever the exhaust/motor noise drowns out ALL sound) I get I faint whininig (for you Gran Turismo guys, it's similar to when you install a close ratio gear box).
I guess what I am asking is, has it always been there and I didn't care to listen? am I paranoid? Has anyone else had similar experiences??
I am guessing the drive train is just wearing normally, but I just to get some second opinions. I think the only reason I am trippen out is because all of these people I hear having problems with the synchros in the trannys (the whole grinding every so often, creeping, etc...).
If anyone has any educated guesses, or experience, I really just want feel at ease. I know I have a warranty, but I would rather not have to even think about it.

Well i am sorry that i cannot offer any help but I have also been having any problems I'm hearing an odd clicking sound that is coming from the drivers side driveline. usually i hear it in first second and third gears when going about 30-35 it goes away arond 40mph and happens on acceleration and decelleration.... any one on here have any ideas???
Im at 28k. I get grinds, clunks, cracks, pops, creaks, and snaps. All that. I dont really worry tho. I know our trannys are crap. Ill just get a new one at warranty and get a beefier clutch at the same time. That way i'll be set for the rest of the life of the car. The main problems seem to come after the clutch slips up, which cause you to grind etc. Then the problems kinda build from there. But eliminate the slipping clutch= eliminate the tranny problems. Also, metal shifter bushings should help too.
I drove it last night, shortly after posting this topic. I decided to MUTE the radio this time and get as **** as possible. It seems like the gear meshing sound is both under power, and during down-shifting.
I get the grinding once every now and then, usually shifting into 2nd, and it also creeps from time to time. Is the tranny for the xB shared with another model in the Toyota line? Corolla or Matrix perhaps?
I'm curious if there is any CONFIRMED tranny problems that people are reporting - because for all we know, the people saying that their synchros are going and their tranny is totally crap could be the ones dumping the clutch, and hammering every shift.
I for one am very gentle on my gearbox - nice easy shifts and smooth clutching (no dumping, minimal slipping) - I will admit I am guilty of the once in a blue moon flash of agressive driving (speed shifting and whatnot) but I would think that it could handle it as it's not made a habit of.

yeah I have been having the same problems for a while, since like around 10k, and I have 20k on my 06 now. I have been having grinding from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd for about 10k miles. The tranny wont go I have tried, to break it the other day I took it in because I had no 2nd and 4th and they said it was something to do with the shift linkage cables and said the grinding should stop and they adjusted the sluntch but no such luck.
You are dreaming if you think that Scion/Toyota is going to let you upgrade your clutch if/when they warranty the transmission.
More than likely they will only replace stock for stock. Then you can pay them to pull it all back apart and install the high performance clutch.
Yup, even if you want the overpriced TRD clutch.

You all need to change the tranny fluid - I did after I ran some slick50 added to it for a month and saw a difference right away and then changed to Synlube at 2600 miles and now it shifts like a dream and I got about 5 more miles per gallon too. Seems the stock gear oil is great for making the syncros work well but not the gears. I get a whine in mine when coasting in neutral which is louder that when in gear - all forward gears make a little noise but I only have 8100 miles so far. Clicking noise is usually a CV Joint starting to go and that can be really bad if it breaks under load and flies around and wacks things - have your drive shafts checked asap.

Thanks for some of the info guys! I know that they wont let me put in a nice clutch at the dealer. So I get a new tranny at the dealer, and then I get a new clutch installed at a performance shop. Easy as that!

-Manual tranny
-Tranny doesn't weight 4 million pounds
-undercarriage isn't covered in sand
-trans components and hardware aren't 15 years old
maybe check out a manual and see what it would take to DIY - I can't imagine it would be too difficult at all. Then again, I don't know how much a shop is going to charge you - it may be cheap enough to not even bother getting dirty, but I doubt it.
