fuel economy hungry
I've heard of ecu mods and things of the like that got echo's to 60 mpg, what sort of thing like that are possible for the xB to make it ultra fuel efficient?
I didn't say that any of this is true I'm just going by what I heard. But I do know that mods have been done to improve mileage that alternatively reduce performance. Just looking for options should anyone decide to go that route.
If you reduce the performance anymore on a stock scion you will never be able to drive the car up a hill ... If you wanted better gas mileage you should have gotten a Hybrid ... Special you have a good point, if you push it you could get unlimited miles per gallon ...
actually a cold air intake and exhaust will improve economy, ultra light weight 15's with as skinny of a tire as you care to run will also reduce rolling resistance and improve mileage.
The higher the treadlife (harder tire, less traction but longer wear) tires will also reduce resistance to improve mileage.
also if you put a lot of thought into driving you can improve mileage as well, for example if you know you have a hill coming up try to build speed gradually at a low rpm rather than have to rev higher while on the hill to make it up to the top, coasting down hills will also improve mileage alot.
Different gas will get you different mileage as well, expirement with different stations around you and you will notice a difference.
Generally speaking for the compression ratio and tuning of the scion motors 87 octane will perform the best overall, the higher the octane the higher resistance to burning (and thus pre-detonation aka pinging/knock) so it is not as efficient a fuel especially if the car is not designed for it.
Keep your cruising RPM's as low as possible, if in a manual always use the highest gear you can, keeping it to 70 on the highway rather than 80 makes a world of difference in my 5 speed XB.
As mentioned above, riding fairly closely behind another vehicle allows them to take most of the effects of aerodynamic drag and lets you benefit from it,
***DISCLAIMER***
Always drive a safe and legal distance behind any other traffic
That is all I can think of off the top of my head that are proven ways to improve milage and not just snake oil.

Get an APexi or whatever those things are called. Can't you adjust the A/f ratio with those. although most peeps use it to dial in more power, it could also be used for economy, I believe. You won't be breaking any speed records, but depending on how patient you are, I bet you could improve it some. IMO, the biggest factor is how heavy is your foot?
The Echo was named the most fuel efficient car recently so it wouldn't surprise me that much altho they must've been creeping to get those numbers.
But then, it's been deemed by LavaBox as BS so we might as well lock this thread...

You can also improve the gas mileage by improving electrical system (improve alternator and ignition efficiency), using lightweight engine parts -- aluminum and titanium parts, lowering your car will produce less drag coefficient, and reshape our box to something more aerodynamic
Yes you can get an S-AFC Apex-i fuel controller and adjust the fuel ratio, yes you up the electrical system and yes there are tips and tricks for driving to gain more MPG ... but going from 40MPG to 60MPG is impossible unless you go hybrid ... and Hybrid cars only get about 50 or so mpg ...
He didn't say he expects to get 60mpg out of the Box, he just asked:
Everyone put your flags away, pull out your suggestions...

With my 1850# 1991 manual one liter EFI Geo Metro over the first 7000 miles I averaged a little over 58MPG. Toward the end of that time in warm months some tanks went over 60MPG. I drove 21 miles each way to work about 5.5 days per week average. Some shorter local trips. I rarely exceeded 55MPH and drove some local roads at 40 to 45MPH. It appears that my xa might average 36 to 37MPG for the same driving. I had hoped to make it to near 40MPG but do not think it possible. The expense to gain one or two MPG would not be worth the savings in gasoline.
To get anywhere near 60 MPG in an Echo one would need bigger pedals and be moving awfully slowly - it's had to pedal anything that heavy very fast...
(I remember "hearing" about fancy carbs that were buried by oil companies that gave old '50's Buick straight eights 100 MPG capabilities - I believed those just as much :D )
