Default Help with a transmission problem? Please?

Hi, My local Toyota service department is running out of ideas on how to fix this problem so Im hoping the folks here might have some ideas. I love this car except for one problem. I have a 2006 xB rs 4.0 with about 39,000 miles on it, it randomly pops out of fourth gear. I bought the extended warranty and I have no complaints about that but so far the local Toyota shop has torn down the transmission and replaced 4th gear and they have replaced the shift cables. I got it back today and it still pops out of fourth gear. Only fourth gear and especially when the car has been driven for awhile. If anyone has ever seen this problem before I would be grateful for and help. Thanks for reading this.

Tim

Shifter seat or the bushing seems to be the result of a Google search. Not your car specifically but on a Toyota forum.

I had a mini cooper with kind of the same problem except it was with second gear. I believe the dealership told me it was the synchros that had gone bad. To fix it I had an entire new transmission put in.

It was probably anything but the synchros, which aid in shifting but are not necessary to keep the gears engaged.
The OP's problem is likely in the linkage, like shifter seat or bushing, or wear or damage to gears, shafts, dogs etc inside the transmission.
Dealerships are often not qualified to rebuild a transmission, and so exchange them toward a new or remanufactured one.

Thanks for the replies. Fourth gear and the syncros have been replaced as well as the shift cables/linkages. A bent shift fork was suggested at another site but I think they would have checked that when they had the transmission apart...thanks again.

You could try taking it to a transmission shop to have it looked at and talk it over with them. Although if it is under warranty then it's free for the dealer to fix.

I bought the extended warranty. Im guessing their next step is to replace the trans. It doesnt always have the problem though. Probably happpens four times in a 50 mile trip and when I have the service manager ride with me it sometimes takes awhile until it acts up. Its just annoying to keep going through this. Thanks again for replies.
