Default CAI?

Is a bypass valve important to you? Here's some info on the AEM with the valve and a few other options from Injen and AEM without the valve.

the bypass valve is good to prevent hydrolocking, but the AEM(OEM) CAI isnt that good. I prefer Injen

K&N got the thing to stop water from going into the filter as well, you can take that thing off when its not raining so it can suck even more air.

I have 2 scion Xb's. The first one I bought has the OEM AEM CAI. It runs around like a snake, and when you get on the gass its quiet as can be. On my NEWER XB I got the AEM intake thats aftermarket. I goes the same as the INJEN but does not have the design flaw of the INJEN where the crank case vent tube is next to the intake on the AEM where as on the INJEN its before the MAF sensor. The AEM aftermarket is the better design because it will not contaminate the MAF with stuff from the crank case.

with an xa the k&n get's the coldest air with the least amount of bends in the pipe. the xa injen sucks it pulls hot air from inside the engine compartment , the dealership aem intake sucks cuz it has like a bazillion bends and gets the least hp of any intake.

K&N is the way to go and if you really are afraid of hydrolocking just by a bypass you can get universal ones or use a AEM they say they are for AEM only intakes...... but i mean cmon a pipe is a pipe you cut it and slip the bypass on

hey fellas, yea I was thinking the same for myself: getting the K&N instead of the Injen SRI. But installing a bypass valve......means cutting a new intake pipe. Sigh! don't think it would be easy for me to do. Does anyone know how good that K&N drycharger cover really is? I know it wont help if the filter is submerged, but how well does it protect from splashes from a heavy downpour?

for what it's worth, we got about 2 inches of rain in 24 hours last week and i drove home in that business.

my fog lights are still holding water, but my injen SRI never hydrolocked.

i wouldnt imagine it would your running a Short Ram Intake
stays under the hood.....not a Cold Air Intake that is exposed to the elements....oh and its your engine that hydrolocks ont your intake and itll only happen if you fully submerge it in water and i dont think the K&N is that low down but the drycharger is supposed to repel rain and help keep the filter dry and in good condition not protect it from being submerged thats where a by-pass valve would come into play and only being fully submerged would make the by-pass work its all about air pressure

Thanks fellas, I made my up my mind and decided to go with the K&N for my xA. SHould be here on friday.

Devious, so based on what you said, does that mean if the K&N cone filter is only partially submerged, the engine would still be able to get air? No water would get into the engine right? I know it sounds stupid, but lets say the filter is only half submerged and you go WOT, water would get into the engine since its trying to suck in air?

it shouldnt because there isnt enough vacume to suck water UP the pipe into the engine because it still has some un-submerged area it might get some moisture but i mean any cold air will even with a bypass it will do the same like i said the by pass only works in full submersion

well, good to know that I made the right decision I guess. I had a SRI on my corolla back in the day and man that filter used to get crazy hot even after a short drive.

Anyone here ever use the Apexi filter? I've heard that it is better than the K&N filter.

the apexi filter is the best filtering and best flowing intake out there. just get the filter if you can find it tho. alot of knockoffs out there

i agree with hot box in every test ive seen the apexi filter is AWESOME but its is also a high premium and in very high demand so it might be a little harder to source one but you should be happy and just fine with your K&N

I just saw the Apexi one installed on my friends Maxima. IT sure does look nice. However, I noticed that the intake requires clamps. I guess thats for his application. If I get the Apexi universal one, it should fit in place of the K&N one without any issues right?

yeah . they make universal sized intakes just get the diameter of your k&n intake pipe.
