Just some info...headers...turbo... ECHO
I am not sure if everyone knows it or not but the engine in the XA and XB is the same as in the ECHO. This is good info when looking for parts like turbo's, header, cams and such. A good fabricating exhuast person at a garage can make a header for an echo work in a scion. I also read somewhere that TRD is not planning on making a supercharger anymore but they are going to make a Turbo for those of you who like those.
If I put *no meaness intended,* does that mean I get to say something like " f*k off? " J/K The echo thing has been mentioned but it doesn't really matter cuz what is really out there for the echo anyway?
Exactally. It's actually reversed, kind of. ECHO owners are happy that parts are finally coming out for the 1NZ-FE! They're glad that this engine is the same as theirs! (www.echofans.net)
A little discussion on headers....
The factory exhaust manifold/header is a pretty darn good design for a production piece.
If you bolt on any of the aftermarket headers I have seen for these engines you are not going to gain much, if anything, they aren't much different than what the factory put on. None of the aftermarket headers I have seen so far are well designed using modern techniques/concepts available, we're talking '70s tech.
If you want real power it will take more than Joe Shmuck at the local exhaust shop to build an effective header. I have spent the past 2 years learning header design from 5 of the best header designers/fabricators in the country and I still don't know as much as I want to know.
I know that a well designed and fully developed header will give the most significant gain in HP of any bolt on by far but won't pass smog (visual insp). It would take an entire exhaust sys from head to bumper to make it work correctly=big $$. Anyone that bolts an over the counter header on to a modified engine is leaving a BUNCH of HP on the table and will get beat by someone that spent the time and $$ to develop a custom header specificaly for their engine configuration and useage.
One header does NOT fit all, each engine should have it's header designed specificaly for it, taking into account the RPM the driver wants to see gains, the other mods done to the engine, and the intended useage of the car (drag, road racing, auto X, hot street use).
For example, my Xa needs more bottom end/mid range torque to get it moving quickly. I would like to fabricate a 4-1 header for it with 1.5" 16 gage primary tubes (about 1.375" ID) 40" long with a modern merged venturi collector with a 2" outlet. I would build the header with adjustable primaries so I could test it in 2" increments until I found the best overall length. Yeah, like my wife will let me take the new car appart for this!!!!
4-2-1 headers are best left for highly developed racing engines, they only show a 1-2% gain over a fully developed 4-1 header on a specific engine and require more testing and $$ to develop fully.

Hey guys.. there's actually a fair bit out for the echo, though moreso "internationally". Saying the echo is a little misleading as well, as the performance parts are more for the hatch (Vitz or Yaris depending on where you are in the world).
At any rate, with the Vitz being tuned for the Vitz cup, there's some decent stuff out there, though admittedly, a lot is with transmission, braking, etc. not at ton of engine items. However, you could find headers, TRD turbo kits, CAIs.. just have to pay a bunch to bring them in.
At any rate, the North American TRD turbo should rear it's head soon.. that'll make for some QUICK cars!

While I had the air box in it had a nice effect. I'ld compare to smoother acceleration.
After Weapon-r short ram installed acceleration dropped a little up to 40mph, but can be compensated by mashing the gas up to higher RPMs in 1st and 2nd. (eats the hell out of your fuel though.)
Hard to notice alot of difference (other than the sound) till higher speeds. REallly fun above 80mph
