Default "MAINT REQD" light on at exactly 5000 mi

The owners manual says change the oil but I did that at 3500 mi.
Is there something else going on?
How do I turn the light off?

I've got an '01 Tacoma with 60k on it and it's never had a light come on.

because no one reset the maintaince light.

From the Tech section:

1. Turn on the ignition and make sure it is on your odometer display, not the trip display.
2. Turn off your ignition. Hold down the trip meter reset button and turn the ignition on. Keep the button pushed in.
3. The maintenance required light will flash for a few seconds. when it turns off, let go of the reset button.

It's just an "idiot light" anyway. it just turns on every 5000 miles. It doesn't really mean anything. it's just a counter to help remind you of your maitanence schedule. If you had noticed, at about 4,000 miles, after you start the car it flashes for a few seconds to kinda remind you that the 5,000 mile maintainence mark is coming up.

I went back to Toyota to get my first free oil change at 4,700 miles and the service writer did that to re-set it so the light would not come on at 5,000.

So how often is everyone changing their oil? I did my first one today at 2,500 bc I heard it was good to do the first one early. Can we really go up to 5,000 miles?

first one at around 200 miles. Cheap oil cheap filter
second one at around 1200 miles. Cheap oil cheap filter
current mileage around 1380 miles
will change oil and filter again at around 2500 miles
lots of aluminum shavings

Yes we can go up to 5,000 miles but do judge by color.
