Metallic rattling noise from flywheel area
Bought an 05 stick with 15k miles. It started making an intermittent metallic rattling sound from the flywheel area. It goes away if I put the clutch down just a bit. It does it in any gear and meutral. It's directly engine speed dependent. It comes and goes, but seems to be getting worse, and more frequent.
Also, sometimes my starter doesn't engage; I have to rock the car just a bit in gear, then it works. Also intermittent.
Any ideas? Seems like they're related.

I have the SAME exact problem. If im not mistaken its the throw-out bearing from the clutch. Its really annoying and happens especially when the car is under load. If you happen to take it to the dealer and they tell you what wrong with it, then give me a PM, just to make sure i get the right thing fixed. Im replacing my clutch very soon, so if its that, then i have no problem. But please let me know.
Wow...odd timing of this post. My car started doing this yesterday when I left work. After a while the noise stopped. It did it again this morning first thing, but stopped before I left Sonic with my breakfast. I just checked with the dealer, and if they replace the clutch and pressure plate + resurface the flywheel, it'll be over $900.00. Think it's time for me to look at getting the TRD clutch and have someone else do the work. I'd come out cheaper and have the better clutch--over 37K miles, so no warranty left.
In Puerto Rico you get 3 yrs. 36,000 miles or 6yrs, 60,000 if you decide to upgrade.
As for the clutch i decided to pick up a Spec Stage 2 clutch which only cost me $230.00, brand new and shipped. It definately a better idea to change the clutch then pay the $900.00 to keep the existing one.

They fixed the throw-out bearing, and threw in a new clutch for free! "a one-time courtesy".
I was generally very impressed with the service department. They treated me very well, as well as when I had a Mercedes years ago.

Hi guys,
I'm new to the forum and I have a similar problem. This metallic noise that I got appeared and disappeared pretty quickly. After I initially heard it, I stopped the car to check if I had a can stuck to my front-right wheel. Then, I messed with my 1st gear to see if I could hear it again, and naturally I did ( I was driving straight). Next, I turned my wheel to get into my driveway (I had stopped in the middle of my street), and the noise disappeared. Is there any way you guys know of to create this metallic noise again?
My car is at 34k miles and it's still under the basic warranty (3yr/36k). I called up my local scion dealership and asked if they could check the problem out, but I told them that the metallic noise has disappeared. They told me that the clutch is not under warranty, and that if I just brought the car in for them to check it out, it would cost me $100.
Are they trying to take my money? Or is there a trick to ask them to check out the car for free? I dont want to bring my car in, pay $100 for no reason, and find that because there's no noise from the clutch that I can't replace it. Also, can you replace things under warranty even when things aren't broken? Could I ask them to replace certain parts that are under warranty even if they don't need replacement?
Thanks for all the nice info.

throw out bearing could be counted as powertrain since it is not really a wear and tear item.
They say the clutch is not covered under warranty is because the actual "clutch plate" is a wear and tear item.
Tell them it's not the clutch plate, it is a powertrain problem. Powertrain warranty is 60,000 miles
