Default Need more low end torque.......

So far I have upgraded in the sense of body mods but I still am looking for better torque. I have read that lightweight pulley's could possibly help but is mostly more a better AC and having the car idling at lowering rpm's. It seems that most options pump up your HP not your torque. Other than putting on a super or turbo what are my options.

I plan to order an AEM Intake; but what else could I do the major reason for upgrading is because my 17" rims are really heavy. I'm not trying to pour a lot of money in it and I know that it isn't made for speed but low end torque is real bad and I plan on ordering a moster system.

Also I am trying to avoid the whole my car sounds like a lawnmower aspect so I am trying to avoid headers or if someone can recommend me a nice cat back that wouldn't be hella loud with an intake. Headers would be way too loud.

monster motor works 4-2-1 header makes good low end torque... but the price is pricey just a touch...

btw the header isn't loud at all just helps make the system flow better

Hey Pannyman, I ordered the monster motorworks 4-2-1 the first part of the week. I currently have the AEM CAI and also have the RS-R Exmag GT II on order. Hoping to have them all in by next weekend. I'll let you know just what type of sound you can expect with the AEM CAI and MMW headers. I had decided againt headers for the same reason as you, but finally couldn't resist the temptation of better low end.

When mine are shipped and I get them installed, then I can let you know on the MMW specifically......unless hotbox has some more insight.

Hey lppro-xb, I got the MMW 4-2-1 header on yesterday. I'd say that the sound is just a little louder, but very minimal. Low end torque is deffinitely improved and is very smooth throughout the RPM's to top end. The header came with brackets for the stock heat shield which I re-installed because of spotty reports of the shifter cables being melted on the 5-speeds by headers (though I have not seem any of those reports in regards to the MMW header specifically).

There was only two minor negative things that I ran into.

First, the MMW header have the bracket for the lower stock bracket that mounts to the motor. In my case, this bracket would not bolt up, so I removed the mounting bracket completely. It was off by approxiamately 1/4-1/2 inch. I could have spent a little time on the bracket and bent in enough to make it fit, but in that case it would not fit the stock manifold if I decided to put it back on in the future. I believe some/most of the headers available for the xA and xB do not even have this bracket on the header anyway.

Second, a couple of the welds on the inside of the header near the flange seemed a little pitted. Not so much to cause me any concern that the welds were not strong enough, but they were worth mentioning. All of the inside welds had been ground to smooth them out for maximum flow, but the ones that were pitted seemed like maybe the penetration wasn't sufficient or something. Not too sure on the cause because I'm clueless when it comes to welding and penetration is merely a term that I've heard in referring to welds that I believe is applicable in this case.

BTW....I just saw on the sponsored sales post that the GB for the MMW header at $250 with free shipping ended on July 23rd.

it seems as though that lower bracket on the header is a problem on other 4-2-1 headers as well, such as the OBX. when I installed my freinds OBX, I noticed that it was about 1/4" off, and I'd need a torch to adjust it.

But yea, 4-2-1 header's is basically the only power mod which will improve low end torque.

Maybe a SRI (short ram intake)

Yep I agree. You need a 4-2-1 header. And a short ram intake. I have an underdrive pulley and the 4-1 header. Mine is better at hwy driving, than around town. Torque is definitely better in the 4-2-1. I also think doing some type of ground wire kit it good. My xB would stumble during accelleration at lower speeds. Installed the ground wire kit and the problem went away. Good Luck.

P.S. there is a good Do it Yourself, Ground Wire Kit in the tech section here. I did mine for about $12 buck's.

The megan racing 4-1 for 80 bucks shiped to your door and works. It just depends on if you want for name brands there is no true 421 for the 1nz.

I believe savage has the obx. He's seemed rather happy with it from the posts that I've seen.

I've got the MMW 4-2-1. No problems out of it so far, but it's $250+.

Getting a pulley will give you more usable power through the whole range. It has been by far the most improvement of any mod I've done using the butt dyno.
