Default Poor mpg with K&N Typhoon Intake

I recently installed a Typhoon Intake on my xA and was getting my regular mpgs (30-33). after a few months I noticed my mpg were slipping to 28, then 26 and that is where I took off the filter and replaced it with the stock.
I was then back to my normal 30-33. does anyone know what the problem could be? I clean the filter after an oil change so it was always clean.

more air = more fuel = less MPG and that is not talked about much, in fact quite the opposite. But yes intakes do lower your MPG.

Wow, something could definitely be wrong, I have a typhoon and its working like a charm, Its actually really good on gas milage you know. I have been told, and this is relatively with most intake systems that the oil on the filter can sometimes be the culprit. the oil morely affects the MAF sensor and Ive heard from many people now that the oil can clog up the maf and cause you to lose performance and have bad gas milage.
Take out the Maf and see if its really dirty, be careful with it tho.

I have the same problems with my K&N, i know that it is possible to reduce mpg with the better performance that your car gets but I'm not sure if this problem is specific with the xA model typhoon,
I'm running the xA version on my xB since I got it for free, any more input on this would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard it both ways, some say you gain gas mileage, others say you lose, either way you shouldn't lose that much. Did you make sure nothing came loose? Sounds like you got an air leak or you put too much oil on the filter if you cleaned it.

Pull the MAF out and get some cleaner do it every other oil change you will see a difference.Just follow the directions on the spray cleaner and never touch the little bulb thing with your fingers.

There has to be something else if you went from 33mpg to 26....the intake would lower it maybe 1-2 mpg.

well i just put the intake back on now that the weather is better. I filled up yesterday and I will see what happens. Thanks for the info. I will check for leaks and the MAF sensor if the mileage decreases.

Is there a brand of cleaner you can recommend? I just put an intake on mine and when I looked at the little bulb on the MAF sensor it looked a little dirty, but I wasn't sure because I've never seen one before.

My wife is gettting about 200 out of a tank on her RS2.0 She doesn't even have 30K on it. She does have the aem CAI on it. We got the car used. It's an auto and it's driven in the city only. I remember getting at least 27 on my 5 speed camo. I guess I'll clean the MAF too.

do know that K&N filters all use a water like gel in the filter cloth which is design to both increase economy and power at the same time. because of this, these filters will need to be replaced rather often. a 2 month period is pretty long. last i heard it was suppose to be replaced once a month or two months at a time other wise it starts to kill your economy. and when the filter starts to get too old it can start letting all the crap it's collected into the intake and causes the maf to get dirty.

most of what i know about it though was told to me by a few shops after mentioning that i wanted to get K&N's OEM filter replacement for the xB. they highly suggested against it if it was for the economy reasons because for one the filters cost a good amount over the stock filters and require replacement within a short time and if not replaced they can cause headaches. all in all costing you more money then you are trying to save.

Cleaning out the MAF does help but having a heavy foot doesn't :D

Everyone loves the sound an intake makes!
