Default Scion xA Timing Chain..

I'm fixing a blown head gasket on my Scion xA 2006. I wasn't able to open the file I got of the repair manual. I want to make sure when I put the timing chain back on.
Do I put it back exactly the same place to where it was when I took it off or do I have to match it up dead center or use a diagram?

This is my first time doing a head gasket so I want to make sure I'm doing it right. Thank you

A repair manual would be a huge help for you.

You're going to need to make sure you have everything timed correctly in regards to the crankshaft and intake and exhaust cams. Timing chains will usually have marks that coincide with marks on the crank and cam gears to make sure everything is lined-up correctly.

but yeah you have to get the 1st cylinder to top dead center and then both cams in the right spot or the pistons will hit the valves

It's not that it has anything to be with being 'secretive'...it fact it used to be available on here years ago until Toyota began to send out letters from their legal team in regards to hosting and making copyrighted material openly available. Since they do sell the manuals I imagine it had more to do with maintaining a revenue stream, regardless of how small it might have been.

I don't know anything about installing or removing timing chains, but it looks like Section 06 of the Service Manual (section listed as Engine Mechanical) has a section on the Timing Chain. If the OP PMs me, I'm sure I can figure out how to get him the information he needs (although since this thread is a week old, he probably doesn't need it anymore). Or maybe mrrcom sent him the same thing. That section of the manual looks like 10 MB. I'll check my PMs tomorrow to see if he happens to see this and still needs it.

Yes I still need it. I was cleaning the head today, getting ready for the new head gasket, BUT then I noticed a small hole in the corner. About a quarter of an inch hole. So now I have to find a refurbished one. Anyone know where I can get one for cheap. I live in Phelan southern California. Thanks

That's not good, do you have a picture? (Wondering if it is fixable)
Try googling "scion recycler xxxxx" where xxxxx is your zip code.

Yeah no problem! It doesn't really look right does it. I was thinking there was damage till checked mine. I did a valve job when I had my engine apart. I had never done it before but I found out Its pretty easy actually and didn't really take that long. I think the fiddliest bits were the valve retainers but a magnet to get em out after you have the valve spring compressed and tweezers to put them back worked great.

Do you think I should do a valve job too? Do you know if the Scion xb manual is the same as the xa? The xb one was the only one I could get to download. And I think I took off the timing chain wrong. The orange markers were in the right place but the other one were not lined up right. How do you reaet everything so its lined uo right?

the motors are the same so the timing setup will be the same. So if I remember right the cams and their timing marks should be pretty close to like 12 to 1 o'clock position and the crank should be turned so the 1st cylinder is at TDC... its timing mark is like 2-3 oclock I think. After you get the crank and cams in the right spot it'll kinda fall into place. Its an interference engine, the pistons will hit the valves, so when you get back together just rotate it around slowly to make sure you're correct.

The valve seat areas were kinda crusty on mine but I was already planning on doing all that kind of stuff. If you aren't having any problems you could leave them i bet

Also when you finally get it back together remember to take the fuel relay out and just let the starter spin the motor so it gets oil flowing.

@DannyFrost, Hi. I was today to a new car garage to change the oil. The mechanic show me, that he have a full car Scion xB 2006 with a working engine for cheap.
There is no title. I not have room in my drive-way for another car. If you consider, here is another option.

I look at this car and have all the engine parts. The tires are little low. The mechanic say that he not remember to see damages under the car. For some reasons I like this car.

The car is in driving conditions. There the lip need a "facelift" or so. Such a waste standing there.

There have some bumper cosmetic and missing like bumper lights. Keep in mind there is no title.
Or need to take the Car ID number and see on-line, who was the last owner.

Thank you for your help. I appreciate it. How cheap? How much do you want for it? Where are you located?
