Default what causes this?

Rough idle in drive sometimes rattles the hood. valves just adjusted. Any suggestions would help my dealer is an idiot. Drives nice when not idle.

Wow guys thanks for the reply, I thought this was a forum to help each other with car issues and such, not for punctuation and grammar. What a great first experience!!!

Hey Dannewvillage, I wouldn't jump the gun here; you only gave us two hours to reply, and by being so pessimistic your only going to encourage neagative replies. I'm assuming that your having your problems when at stop signs or redlights when you are in drive by your post. If the dealer just adjusted the valves the shake from that would come through the steering wheel as well as shake the hood. If I were you I would check the hood height adjusters, the little black rubber tabs that you can spin, it could be that there the problem. Other than that it could be a mount or bushing problem, how many miles are on your xb? They Could need replacing.

Sorry guy some people on here are a-holes others are people who have been on here a long time and get tired of the same questions being asked over and over but thats why this forum has slowed down so much because of replies like the ones above. ScionLife is startin to look like some crappy honda forum were all people do is _____ and fight, lets help people out and not bash them please. BTW you should put up more info about ur ride so we can have a better idea of the problem.

if you have never changed the plugs it might be time. bad spark plugs can really make an engine isle like crap and therefore cause some major rattling that can work its way back up the steering wheel.

Also, your air filter may need to be replaced/cleaned.

if you check in your maintainance manual it has a list of things that need to be done at 50,000 and most of them are easy enough to do for the novice car owner. give a look and let us know if none of that helps.

what i would do first is start with your maf sensor you can unscrew & unplug it and clean it with some electrical parts cleaner.. you can pic this stuff up at hardware stores... after it gets up there in the mileage that part gets dirty and often over looked.. i cleand mine it it made a diffrence right away give that a shot... and replace your sparkplugs... . i highly doubt it the hood height *****.

Most of the above possibilities could cause a rough idle. Add also sticking choke, and fuel mixture wrong (engine managment sensor mismanaging fuel supply at idle perhaps). Another very common cause of a rough idle is timing out of spec or idle speed too low.

The spark plug change idea is a very good one and is cheap and easy to do. When you pull the plugs look at the contacts they should have whitish to brownish/white deposits not blackish. Black and sooty means poor ignition from poor or mistimed spark or excess fuel (rich). Very white hot burned looking is not great either, caused most often by too lean a fuel mixture.

Dannewvillage, I have a similar type of noise under the hood somewhere too. It only happens when in drive (automatic trans) and have come to a stop. I can hear something vibrating or knocking. When you put it in nutural or park the sound goes away, so it must be something that rubs or touches only when the engine is torqued. So far I have not been able to find it, but I don't think it has anything to do with the engine's running.

You gotta watch out for the d-bags on this site. I would start with the plugs and go from there. If you haven't changed them I am willing to bet that's it.

I have a similar issue. I have an 04 xB manual trans with 78000. When I come to a stop my idle goes down to about 800 but when i am almost stopped it drops to about 500 and shakes and comes back up to 800 and then does it one more time before it evens out to a smooth idle. What could this be?

I just got the box back from the dealer and they checked the engine top and bottom, all vacuum hoses, spark plugs, valves, and all sensors. they state that all is good and that the computer makes the engine idle up and down for fuel regulation and thats why it idles rough. I adjusted the height adjusters under the hood and the car has quieted some, next i am going to tackle the air filter housing b/c it rattles around a lot. Thanks for all the suggestions. Does the dealers assessment sound correct?

Check the exhaust when it is running rough to see if it is puffing out some gas or sounds like it is skipping. Could be you have a little valve problem that got worse when they adjusted them or maybe an air leak or poorly reinserted coil or injector is leaking air. They pull the top of the engine off to adjust the valves and a lot of stuff has to come off the engine when they do that including the plugs being removed so that the engine can be turned over to adjust the valves. Could be one got regapped smaller when it was dropped.

Shouldn't idle rough. How rough is the idle?? Can you feel the car shaking?? What RPM does it idle at? The cure for a rough idle is to fix the rough idle not the rattles that occur from it, altho while it makes things rattle is a good time to tighten up things like that
