Default Do it yourself turbo kit

VWs are cool-the 2.0 aba motor and the TDI from a few years back share features where you can pull the turbo and manifold straight off the TDI, bolts right up to the ABA motor and exhaust and then you get some tubing and hook up everything so the air flows and walla-you have a turbo. It takes nothing more and I beleive that set-up pushes about 6psi or so with an internal blow-off.

So here is the question....can this be done with an xB?

Get a turbo manifold from somewhere, bolt up a small, quick spooling turbo with an internal BOV (or add one) that doesn't produce more than say 5psi, run some tubing and there you go-turbo power.

Maybe need to run a oil line and tap the pan but would there be other things that need to be done to make it work? Wouldn't the MAF and ECU just register that there is high air flow-accomidate it with more fuel flow and everything should work?

Maybe I am missing something fundamental but more air whether forced or whatever is still just more air-right?

If you're ambitious/crazy, you could definitely fab up a <$500 junkyard turbo setup, but that doesn't mean it will work well.

Ultimately, the problem is how the ECU would deal with it-- you'd probably have to scrounge up bigger injectors and a new fuel pump, and go with something like a megasquirt setup to manage it.

Like most things, it can be done if you're determined enough, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea or won't destroy your engine.

I had forgot about that thread-re-read it today from start to finish.

Gets me thinking and then re-thinking the headaches with it.

I can buy an eclipse with a turbo already set up for like $3500 and that is a very easily upgradable car....hey I can paint it bright green and run a NOS kit that blows the floor out and then me and Dom can battle it out.....

I think maybe just the nitrous kit and a reliable xB is what I am after.....

unless you REALLY, TRULY, UTTERLY, without a DOUBT, want to go turbo than do it. But if you want to do just to make your car go a little quicker stick with the NOS. The headaches with turbo charging are immense.

I keep running into that too. It's my only car right now and I have a daughter to pick up at school daily so it has to be reliable-always.

well id stick with the nitrous then man. its super reliable as long as your not stupid and follow these three steps. 1. always run 91 in the tank when juicing, it will knock ever so slightly and the computer will retard the motor if you dont, ask me how i know, 2. never use it below 2500 rpm, the valves are not closing fast enough before then to prevent a backfire. 3. dont use it for more than 15 secs at a time, trust me, 15 secs is a very long time lol, when i juice im probably httin 60 in 6-7 secs with a full bottle and a 35 shot, it goes lol. just dont go using 3 bottles a month haha. ive had mine for about a year anda half now, and im only on my 5th bottle, with such a small shot it lasts a long time. o i just installed one, and i have to say its prob the best thing next to the nitrous itself, is a bottle heater, omg! lol

Bottle heater is cool too-huh?
I found a bottle, opener, and braided lines on craigslist for $220. Maybe a good deal-probably not something to buy used though-huh?

Not to get off topic.........BUT I have a general question about nitrous, do you have to open and close the main valve on the bottle everytime you drive your car or do you just leave it open all the time?

um you can buy used. but inspect it well! make sure the hydro date is fine, i think they have a hydro test lol. make sure bottle doesnt leak, test the heater. make sure its a fuel injection system. and know what kinda jets you need to tone it done.

and no, dont leave your bottle on all the time. unless you have a remote opener thats a solenoid type, you turn it off every time your done with it. all that constant pressure will leak off eventually even if only a little at a time. i mean i guess if you really want, you can leave it on, but you may get more frequent leaks, and shorter bottle life. and what if you have it on, and dont realise the switch is activated and accidently juice when you didnt mean to? eek, could be bad

So everytime you want to go somewhere, say McDonolds, you open up your hatch, loosen the **** and drive to McD's. When you get there, you open the hatch, and tighten the ****. When you want to leave, you follow the same process?

no, if you know you wanna use it, turn it on, then turn it off when you get home. it was asked if its ok to always leave it on, and generally its not a good idea, but if your goin out for an hour so its fine, but if your gunna park and go see movie or go to the mall, just use some common sense turn it off. my kit was all sealed up and i had it on when i went to the mall,c ame back out about 2 hours later to a little hiss in my engine bay . turned off the bottle went home, and had to redo teflon paste in the fitting going into the solenoid. luckily it wasnt a bad solenoid itself . now i turn it off if im not guna be around it for awhile. just things like that. you can go pay a 1-200 bucks and never have to worry about it with a bottle open, flick the switch, bam nitrous, flick it back, bam its off. that help? leme know if you need anymore help

I gotcha now. I see how it works. One more thing, I know Zex makes a remote bottle opener so that you can open it from the driver's seat. Will it close it as well?
