Default Drowned? AEM Intake

I did a search on this topic and found some close but thought I would give a warning.

I was coming home from a business trip the other day, rain coming down by the bucketful, like an inch and hour. Highway was busy and I was running behind semis and cars coming home. Well after about an hour of this rain my XB starts to hicupp.
It was almost like I hydroplaned (which I did a little of) but I noticed it on the downhill slopes more than most. After this happened a few times I started noticing a lack in acceleration and that my idle was idleing like it should.
So I pulled over at a gas station, put about 5 gallons of 91 octane in hoped that would cure it. Well it did not, the surging, stalling, hesitating got worse. So I pulled into an auto parts store looking for some heet figuring I might have some water in the gas I picked up. I added the heet and it seemed to help a little till I got back on the highway and it really started bucking and jumping, idle would go all the way to almost 2K and then drop down to 200, surge again and almost die.
Well I called for a ride home and went out the next morning to see what was wrong. Now I threw a code when it died on the highway, the check engine, trac and another idiot light (VRC?) came on which according to this site might be a camshaft problem. My XB is right at 80K, So that was a possiblilty, or maybe a timing belt...
So I go out and take a look under the hood and notice a lot of water still standing under the hood. I broke down almost a 100 miles from home and we hauled it back on an open trailer and it had set almost 12 hours since it broke down.
Well on a hunch I took off the AEM intake and must have poured a pint of water out of the bottom tube. The filter (not a K&N) did not seem to have an oil charge and I am not sure it requires it was still wet. And the bypass filter at the top of the intake which has a small lint type filter was still soaked that I probably squeezed a cup of water out of it.
After taking it all apart, and cleaning it up I tried to fire it up and she ran like a champ. I have driven it now almost 200 miles since and still no problems. So the only thing I can think is I drowned the air out of the motor causing the motor to not run.
I saw where some others have had the same symptoms but the code comes up a crankshaft, I wonder is some had the same problems with a rain storm like I did.

Just FYI in case you might be driving in heavy rain this spring...

thanks for theinfo, that is interesting, by chance did you have the left fog light cover off or do you have the fog lights installed? i know that my car at one time when i did not have the fog light cover on would run funny in the rain. i figured it out that i might be the cover so i put that thing back on and never had a problem again.

just a though...

The check engine light would have to be read to know for sure what it meant. Sounds like you were pulling in enough water to make the engine run crappy, but not enough to lock it up.

To answer questions...

No fog lights... although that tow bar thing is pretty cool. The kid with me told me I should leave it out there, in a Mad Max kind of way.

And yes, it drowned it out to the point that it flooded out (gas wise without air, not water wise). Have ran a full tank through it now and it seems to be fine...

It sounds like the bypass valve did exactly what it was supposed to do.

If you didn't have a BPV on there, you'd be shopping for a new engine right about now.

yep... when i was 16, I borrowed my brothers lowered integra, which had an AEM CAI, but with no bypass filter...

I drove it through a 1 ft deep puddle; it had rained hard the night before; .... rod shot through the block...
