ZPI Turbo'd Auto xB 7.5 Psi-W/ pics and Vid
Do you have a say in how your kit is put together? Really, the turbo there is not a good idea at all. Not only will you have lag beyond imagination, your turbo is vulnerable to road debris. The pipe they are using is rather large and for a 1.5L engine to kick out the exhaust/compress the air,...............err.....you get the point. I was only wondering if you had a say in this?
There are a few issues:
1. Lag
2. If you hit something
3. Where the turbo is placed, you either will run a filter right on the turbo, which is bad, because youll be sucking up all kinds of dirt from the roads, or 2 youll need to run a pipe AWAY from the ground, which then will cause more restriction.

2. & 3.This was one of my concerns, as was sucking water in. But there will be a guard made to protect the turbo and filter from debri and water and what not.
Why not of the manifold, they wanted an easier install for customers and wanted people to be able to use the header they already had installed.
Now these answers are the way I remeber them being explained to me and in my own words. I dont want to place words in ZPI's mouth, but just what I rember in my head from conversations many weeks ago.
Turbo lag is really a thing of the past if a kit is put together properly. I don't imagine with a 16g that lag would be bad, even with the small displacement and turbo positioning. Although I would like to see a 2k to redline pull.
Quality filters will shed 90 percent of water. With a proper filter and gaurd, there shouldn't be any issues with debris getting in the turbo.

He is no longer with zpi but I believe the original shop car kit was being put together while he was around if not shortly after. This design is most effcient with larger displacement engines. With a 1.5 I don't think its a good idea and it looks more like the easy way out if you ask me. That being said, it will work this way. With the piping running under the car you also get the benifits of heat extraction and the ambient air cools the charge piping.

It LOOKS cool

I just hope you don't live in an area like I do that gets a ton of rain in a short period causing some low spots to fill with water... all it will take is ~3 inch deep puddle to splash some serious water on that thing.

Lets also not forget, the angle this picture was taken at makes the pipe look bigger than it is and also makes the turbo look much lower than it actually is. Neat setup.. I would only worry about water more than debris.. though, I know I've bottomed my exhaust on other cars from extreme driveways, etc.

Donovan, tires are an idea or it may be time to revert back to some lightweight 15"s with some tires and stock springs. Or I just have to see what happens with what i have now.

Well the pictures you posted just did it for me. If I decide to go forced induction, it definitely will not be the ZPI kit. I had high hopes at one time for these guys, but that is fading very quickly. I don't think I would run that turbo even if they decided to get CARB certified. (I don't think I have seen any pigs sprouting wings yet.)
Looks like if I decide to go forced induction it will either be a Greddy kit, or having a local friend build a custom kit for me. There is no way I am going to have an xB on air suspension with a turbo hanging down below the car with the exhaust.

Turbo lag is a thing of the past??? Um no...........When selecting a turbo, there are many things to consider. ZPI did mention on their other post that they were getting full boost at 3800. Is that not lag? Come on guys. Whatever though. I disagree with almost everything you guys said. You can put a shield on the bottom of the intake, etc. What happens to splashed water that gets past the shield? Ok, ok ok, lets make the shield cover the intake more,...same thing. What happens to dust and water that gets through? It will just hold it there like a bowl, unless you seal it off, which will then restrict your intake air some more. If they think that putting the turbo there makes it for an easier install, Im sorry, I have no idea where this is going. Whats easier than removing the stock manifold, draining your oil, changing your pan, putting everything back together? No but now, we have tons of piping header to turbo to intercooler, etc. And an external oil pump? I rather drain my oil and change the pan/cover than have to connect separate oil lines and an electric pump to oil the turbo.
Oh and passing the CA emissions? You dont think they will notice the front mount intercooler? WTF? Some of you are still in a dreamstate...its time to wake up. Do some research on turbocharging, intake, etc. The oil element on the new filters are what keeps the water out...but they are also what restricts the air.

A much smaller turbo would be a better choice for this car. But, as we all have appearently not noticed, the 16g is appearently the only turbo that works on a scion.
This kit would be great is couple with a 2.4 swap ;)
