Default 06 xB ipod Pioneer head unit - display issue

Had a search though existing topics and didn't see this issue elsewhere - apologies if I missed it.

I've an 06 xB with the iPod Pioneer headunit upgrade, installed when I bought the car new. Mostly had no trouble but recently it will have no display when I start the car. I rarely turn the unit off other than with the ignition. Now that the weather is warming up it seems to happen more frequently after the car has sat in the sun for a while.

I start up and the unit continues to play whatever was running when I last stopped (radio/ipod/cd) but the display is completely blank. Also, none of the controls work: not even the power button.

After a while the display reappears. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to the reappearance. If I occasionally push buttons as I drive it will eventually come back to life and behave normally from that point.

Haven't taken this to the dealer yet: wondered if anyone else has seen this particular problem and if there's any alternative to replacing the unit (whoever gets to pick up the tab!).

Thanks.

I've had the exact same thing happened to me a few times with the same HU. The problem is that the temp is above normal operating temp. I got out from class one day and went to my car and when i turned it on music started to play but there was nothing on the screen and none of the buttons were working, which was bad because the volume was on max.

The temp in the car was easily over 110 F because it had been sitting all afternoon in the sun. I let the car air out and cool down and it went back to normal. Also, another symptom I had was that it would eject the CD after a few seconds. I don't think this is a defect, just a case of really high temp.

Update:

I had a free oil change from the local dealership so I mentioned the HU issue while I was there. The guy didn't seem surprised or curious and since I just sneak in under the 36,000 mile warranty he quite happily ordered a replacement unit.

Didn't feel it was worth pressing him for details since he was so readily signing-off on a replacement!

I have the same unit in my xB.
I only used the CD player once before - when I bought the car new, just to make sure the CD player worked.
So now, almost 2 years later, I put a CD in it, and get an "Error 1" message.
I think I will phone the dealer on Monday - I have ~30 thousand miles on my car - sure hope they will fix the unit!!

3-year; 36,000 mile warranty -- they should replace the unit for you.

Good luck!
