Default 2006 stereo control steering wheel to early 2006 conversion

I've seen murmurs here and there, but nothing definitive.

Has anyone successfully completed a conversion using the late 2006 stereo control steering wheel mated to an earlier hub?

has anyone attempted it unsuccessfully, for that matter?

what i am essentially looking for are the physical differences between the late 2006 wheel itself and the earlier versions.

Thanks!

late 2006.. meaning with the controls? putting it in earlier?

i've done the '06 tC into an '05. the wheel itself had no differences and i believe it would hold true for the xB as well.. even all the '05 wheels i've seen (for the tC) had the necessary screw points for the controls and other pieces..

i can check to see to completely confirm that.

the only issue you'll really run into is hooking up the controls and wiring that stuff up if you're going that route.

thanks t -

i appreciate it. i'm hoping this will help anyone else in the future, so i'm asking the hard questions...

so, it sounds like so far, my initial hunch is on track: physically, the wheel will likely fit, and the lion's share of the conversion will be electrical.

yup.... there's no point in redesigning the wheel itself and it'll just cost unnecessary money...

probably why the necessary mounting points in the tC wheel for the '05 was perfectly fine when i installed the '06 components in... everything physical wise will be fine..

the rest was all electrical.

knowing how the spiral cable stuff in the wheel works.... i could really wire anything into the wheel if i wanted to now..

lemme know if you need help with that

I'm almost wondering if the tC assembly was brought over.

here's the 05 leather wheel:

and the 06 wheel, lower bracket looks different, more like a Y

yeah... just checked...

you got the pics right.. the later '06 does have the bracket for the controls which isn't present on the earlier one... poopies..

hmm... i guess the real question is... can the '06 steering wheel...
wheel.. itself.. mount up on the '05.. if that works.. then the airbag assembly along with the controls can follow too.. :?

when you do a steering wheel swap, does the airbag have to come with it? for example...if i go from an 05 to 06 xB wheel would the old airbag work? what if i went from an xB wheel to a tC wheel? are airbag harnesses generally the same between models?

the over all steering wheel design doesn't really matter its the steering shaft that goes into the steering wheel hopefully should still be the same size diameter and splines on the shaft

looks to me, and i could be wrong (i'm known for it!), but the spokes at 3 and 9 look to be quite different between models. It's my assumption that the airbag would be wheel-specific in this case. further, while i don't intend to control the stereo with the late 06 wheel, I am hoping to get the conversion done with functional buttons on the wheel, re-purposing those used initially for stereo control.
