Default Adding a cig lighter?

I want to add a cig lighter to my xB, inside the glove box for my ipod fm transmitter/charger, so its out of sight, but still close to the radio for good signal. How can I do this?

Autozone/Napa/Walmart sell an add-on socket. Usually $5-10. Then tap off of your existing lighter for power and put it where you want.

You might want to also think about some sort of quick disconnect on it so if you have to remove the glove box it's not a pain in the booty.

Your talkin about the one that plugs into the exisiting socket right? Thats what im trying to steer away from. I considered that, but I want to make it look as oem as possible. I want to hard line it into the fuse box and have an open socket somewhere in the glovebox, and keep the one in the cabin open and clean looking. I don't like wires runnin around my car

Good point. Though hopefully I don't have to remove my glove box

To change the air filter you do. Or if you don't the person that changes it does.

At least in the XA it works that way.

p.s. I think they sell lighter sockets at autoparts stores, then just run wires to the back of the existing lighter and tap in there, or maybe just run one across to the fuse box.

yeah you can buy the cig lighter at autozone for like $6. Just run the power and ground to it and u can literally put it anywhere u want. I normally run it from the fusebox or battery....just make sure to fuse things off.

What size fuse would you use for a cig lighter?

For an actual cig lighter that will be used for lighting cigs better put 25-30 amp fuse. If however you are only running electronic goodies you can and should use a lower value really maybe 10-15 amps...depends on how many amps the accessory draws.

^^ For 25-30A fuse, use at least 14ga wire. For 10-15A use at least 18ga.

Figure accessory draw then select wire size then fuse accordingly!

This is a vw 12v plug out of a jetta. lit ring is red. VW also installed green lit rings in some of the golfs also. Junk yard free-bee

Here is the link, just in case my pics don't show (like always)... http://scionpictures.blogspot.com/

I simply piggy backed off the existing 12v. Then I tapped off the HVAC controls to run the lit ring when the lights are on.

Thanks for the input guys. Singleshot, you just cut the wires run to the original lighter, and spliced a 2nd set of wires to it? Have you had things pluged into both at one time before?

As long as your not engaging 2 cigarrete lighters at the same time it is unlikely that you would over amp the wiring or the fuse. Running 2 electronic devices with it wired that way would be fine. For best protection of the devices you are plugging in ...they should each be fused to a value for their rating between the lighter accessorie plug (often in the lighter accessorie is a fuse) and the unit itself.

I currently have 2 extra acc outlets in my xA.

I hid one behind the center console kick-panel that powers my GPS, and the second is run out just below the rear cupholder that powers a DC cooler I keep behind the drivers seat (great for keeping road-trip redbulls icy-cold.)

Both are tapped to the OEM cig-lighter power, and both get a 3amp fuse. The

you can take the ones that plug into teh socket . cut the wires and then hard wire them to the wires leading to the cig lighter socket.

I don't power much with either. The OEM one I use to run the radar detector (kind of a oxy-moron with an xB) and the new one I use for the phone charger. I did use both at the same time without issue....

I'd have to check again, but I think I used a 27mm hole saw for the vw lighter.. But that was for that specific lighter. I would imagine that each manufacture would be slightly different and you would want to be exact to make sure the fit is snug. The way they snap in is pretty cheesy, but it works.

No issues what so ever with using both at the same time, but I have never powered anything that took a lot of power.

The last style Durango has some really nice 12v plugs also if you are in the market for OEM plugs. They have a spring loaded lid that says "12 volt" on it in white letters. Very clean..

Your idea is good too hotbox, if worse comes to worst ill try that.

Thanks for all the input guys, really appreciate the help!
