Default Alarm Brain

I assume the "Brain" of the alarm is the main harness with the majority of the wires. I have always read you should hide this rather than leave it under your dash. What exactly is the reason for hiding it. I mean if you stealing a car I would think you know what wires are what.

I guess it would be easier for a theif to reach under the dash for the brain and cut the wires there versus if the brain was hidden then trying to find where you ran the wires.

I am just getting ready to install my alarm so I am trying to get advice. I realize I have to splice into alot of wires in my steering column. Should I splice into the wires there or should I try and follow the wires from my steering column to where they are located further back in my dash and try and splice there. I would think this would make it more difficult to shut off the alarm? :?:
