Default Alpine ida-x305 - anyone else using CD-less technology?

Alpine Site

CNET Site

I just bought an 04 box with the stock unit installed in it... And I (like the rest of us gen y-ers) gotta have my ipod. After looking into all the options, I settled on this. Anyone else using this or other ipod interfaced systems? Anyone else CD-less? I haven't tried it yet, but I'm hoping I can get a portable hard drive to display the same way the ipod does so I can just leave it in the car. Anyone else running a music system off of a hard drive? I'm interested to hear about anyone's experience.[/url]

I'm in the process of ditching my sound system in exchange for a full time carputer. I'm working on mixing a system with OpenICE and Boxee

What if there was one day you wanted to play a cd? i'm a drummer and am always throwing in different demo cd's...
I just stuck with my Alpine deck and hooked up an Alpine KCA-121B to a monster cable Icable A IC IP-7 to it, and bam, got cd and ipod. Yeaaa it's not all in one so separate screens but it's nice to be able to put the ipod wherever I want, 7ft is plenty of leeway.

oh, and it's crazy I never even used the stock aux port on mine before I yanked the stock stuff out...

For as rarely as I actually use my cd player, I dont know if I could give it up entirely-- most of the time, if I want to listen to a CD, I put it on my ipod anyway.

I mostly keep burned mix cds in the car anyhow, which are a throwback to the pre-iPod days, so I could probably even ditch those, now that I think of it.

I probably won't replace my car head unit before it dies, but cd-less is probably the way to go, for better or worse.

Of course, with a car stereo with an SD slot, I could probably even give up the iPod, if not for the odd business trip that makes it really, really nice to have.

I'm considering this HU too. Post pics when finished. Also, where did you buy it from?

I'm at home in front of my computer pretty much every day, so I can burn a CD and throw it on the ipod if I need it. I wasn't sure if I was going to miss it, but so far I don't!

I'll get some photos soon... I got it from Crutchfield... They've always been helpful and it was a competitive price.

I'm loving it, but there are a few cons:

-Can't hook up a regular USB drive like some stereos... It has to be an ipod or other mp3 player.
-Can't adjust font/font size, so text is a little bit bulky.
