Default Amp in Box

I have a Sony Xplod 600W Amp. The amp is in the icebox cooler in the back of the car (xB). The amp is only running at about 300W sayed the installer at Mobile One. My question is will it get to hot if i keep the lid on and use the radio on for a long time. Should i take off the lid when in use or all the time or does it even matter. I live down in Texas so it gets very hot during the summer.

I have an MTX 800watt amp under there too....I too noticed that my amp got hot after a few hours of driving. all I did was put in a 120mm computer fan to cool the sucker. all I did was use a relay to turn it on and off with my remote turn on. mind you tho that a 120mm fan can get loud but if you listen to your music at high volume it shouldn;t be a problem. or can you can get those 80mm quiet fans which would work too.

hope this helps,

So where did you place the fans? From the top of the lid or on the side of the container.

I dunno what he did, but I have one jerryrigged onto the heatsinks on my amp, and one on a vent from the cabin to my spare compartment.

Mine's in there too. It got too hot one day while driving for about 2 hours with it playing non-stop. Other than that day it hasn't done it again.

It's very possible because there's no air flow in there to cool the amp. At low levels it'll probably be ok because the heat can dissipate out of that space quickly enough but at high levels I don't think it will play long. I suggest installing fans.

here's a pic for you guys....

ok now to have it turn on with your remote turn on all you have to do is grab an SPDT relay and wire it up.

here's how to wire up a relay for the fan
relay
85 - ground
86 - remote turn on
30 - constant 12v (fused)
87 - 12v lead to fan
87a - N/C (no connection)

hope this helps,

BTW I also used an amp spacer(about an inch) to keep the under side of the amp of the ground to help cool. which I think works IMO

dont bother with a fan YET. First run it and see if it operates fine. Most quality amps have protection built in for overheating. So if the amp overheats and shuts off then you know you need to do something. If not dont worry about it.
Dont waste time/money on something you dont need.

mtx is a quality amp(but not built for such an enclosure) and after running it hard for about 2 hours it shut down on me cause it got hot. the reason for the fan is so that it wouldn't go under protect. better to be safe thats why I suggested to grab those 80mm quiet fan cause a 120mm is overkill now that I think about it.

as far as cost depending on what fan and where you got to get your relay it can be well under $15 and can be installed in less than 10mins if the amp is already ran.

hope this helps,

I have a 900 watt amp and 2 capacitors mounted in there. Never needed a fan. My amp doesn't get very hot, and I run it with the HU volume on 40+ constantly. I have taken several 4+ hour trips of straight driving and have never had any problems.

you have to use a relay cause the remote can't take the load of both the fan and the amp. check out my previous post on how to wire up a relay.
