Default Amp help... 10 volts?

I need some help. My amp seems to cut out after about ten minutes. A day later, it will come on... or would. Now I got nothing.

I went and got a cheap multimeter. It shows about 9.5 VDC when the car is off, and about 10 VDC when the car is on. This is measured at the amp. I am running 8 gauge wire from the battery to the amp, which is in the xBs hatch. It is ground at the rear seat bolt.

Everything else appears to be running fine.

Thanks for your help.

What's the voltage read at the battery?

If it is that low, you have a flakey battery.

I just thought of that. I'll check it out.

Anyone else have a similar problem that anyone knows of?

Nope.

13 V engine off, 14 V while running. What's happening between the battery and the amp?

Any thoughts? Would a bad connection cause a voltage drop? I wouldn't think so. Also, the 10 V was measured across the amp. Is that normal? Could the amp be at fault? It is used.

I hate electricity.

disconnect the amp from the (+) terminal and measure the voltage @ the wire disconnected from the amp. If it reads less then 12V, then your power wire has inconsistencies. But, this has happened to me before, I assume your 8 Gauge wire has an inline fuse correct? If so, replace fuse. The fuse may look okay, but it is possible that your fuse has failed. That has happened to me twice. I recommend replacing the inline fuse and voltmeter your gauge wire disconnected from the amp only.

also, try re-doing the ground.
remove any paint from the area and make sure it is a good solid connection.

I'll check all connections and fuses.

The resistance across a fuse should be ~0 Ohm, correct?

Thanks again.

resistance should be 0.

check the voltage from the power wire at the amp to a differnt grounding point.

if the voltage is 12-14v your ground is bad.
if the voltage is 9-10. the fuse/power wire is bad.
you can work your way back up the power wire to find out where the problem is...
check the amp side of the fuse to ground...volts???
check the batt side of the fuse to ground...volts???
chack the main connection of power wire (should be the battery) to ground....volts???

from my experience, you described a bad ground or trying to ground through a hinge.

Exactly what he said....ground is the likely culprit.

Got it! The ground wire came uncrimped at the location. Factory crimp, too.

Thanks for your help everyone!
