Default Another Rattle Thread

So there are probably hundreds of other threads on various interior rattles for the xB, so here goes another one:

When I purchased my '04 xB back in 2004, I had heard many people complaining/_____ing about various interior rattles. Despite these stories, my 2004 xB's interior was absolutely flawless. No rattles, no fitment issues...nothing.

Fastforward to the new '06 xB rattletrap. The glove compartment fitment is off because the door itself is kind of warped and doesn't latch correctly. There is a slight buzzy rattle at the passenger side front corner that is set-off by engine harmonics/vibrations at 3k rpm (I tried the electrical tape on the speaker cover trick, but didn't work). The driver side door has a horrific rattle over bumps. It most recently developed a VERY bad rattle noise coming from the mid dash near or around the instrument cluster area.

The fix is me finally giving in and taking it to the service drive for a look. Hate to do it because I know what care-free technicians can do to an interior, but I have no choice. My biggest fear is I'll be chasing rattle problems on this car for however long it is I decide to keep it.

So what gives? The materials are exactly the same as my '04...why such a HUGE difference between the two? It really bugs the crap out of me that my 4-month old xB with less than 4k on the odometer rattles more than every POS old car I've driven in the past...not to mention the fact that my previous xB had none of these problems. What gives? Has anyone on their second xB noticed these issues?

My right rear door lock rattles as well. It helped when I took door panel off and twisted the lock button around. Also the biggest ratteling noises in most scion xB's are from the back seats and the levers as well. Just go to the back seat and hit it towards the back window with your hand and you eill hear an amazing amount of rattles. That kind of gives you the idea of what the seat is doing when hitting bups and whatnot

Well I feel like a complete tool box.

I stopped by the dealership today after work. That horrific rattle that sounded like it was coming from the dash was actually my Sunpass suctioned cupped to my windshield. DOH!

The door rattle is still an issue though. They are ordering me a new glove box and will dig into the door rattle issue a bit further once the part comes in. I'll probably try to fix the door rattle myself as I know what these guys can do to interiors.

My 06 Xb also has terrible rattles.

I have been back to the dealership 5 or 6 times.

They have fixed a few of the rattles and also created more rattles so I am getting picky about what I have them look at.

Trying to focus on the big rattles (the ones you hear with the stereo at full blast).

Can anyone help with this one???

When driving there is a vibration coming from the passenger front door panel. I reach over and press on the door and it goes away. I'm getting accustomed to driving one hand on the wheel the other on the passenger door (long arms), but I'd like it fixed.

Any help would be appreciated,
John

between my engine dampener and my exhaust, my car sounds like its going to fall apart. just crank up the music. most of the interior is plastic anyways...what about little rubber feet that go on chairs or something in certain places?

I get The same rattle from either the glove compartment or passenger
EXACTLY at
2500 to 3k RPM easily reproducable for the dealer, but I too worry about taking it there and them mesing it up more than helping

Ok well I will say that I have had a TON of rattles but spent $330 shipped and 6 hours of my time to sound deaden the xB.

Rattles are nearly completely gone - you may find the rear door is the plastic inserts vibrating against the door metal when bass hits. I realize that the car shouldn't be sold w/ so many rattles but the entire lack of insulation drove me nuts so I went out and bought material to solve the problem.

That is the tannish formed foam hitting the door - a layer of foam will solve that problem. I actually yanked quite a bit of crap out of my xB when I went through and sound deadened it.

I have a rattle in the right front corner of the dash right by the windsheild. It is off and on and not incredibly audible. I'm afraid to have my dealership touch it because I know more rattles will appear.

Solving the rattle problems is a fairly simple, but time-consuming process.
First, sound deaden your car! People are always amazed at what a huge difference sound deadening makes. Every surface and panel in your car has a frequency at which it will resonate. By adding sound deadening, you are effectively dropping the resonant frequency of that surface out of hearing range. This prevents many of the repetitive buzzes, rattles, and ringing that are common in all cars.
Sound deadening will stop the majority of the more dominant rattles. Once you have sound-deadened your vehicle, it is time to find the smaller, less noticeable rattles that were not corrected by the sound deadening. Often, these rattles are panel-to-panel rattling due to stereo systems, or panel separation due to wear and tear over time.
First, take a trip down to O'Reilley, Auto Zone, Napa Auto Parts, etc., and ask for some Air-Conditioning Tape. The stuff is usually sold by the foot and is extremely cheap. You will only use little bits of it at a time, so do not be wasteful and buy 20 feet or so. You will only need a couple of feet at the very most!
Air-Conditioning Tape is a sticky putty-like substance that will stick to just about everything, including plastic, metal, fabric, seats, carpet, clothing, skin, hair, etc., etc..
Start by playing the stereo at a fairly loud volume. while the stereo is playing, search for your audible rattles. When you find the source of the rattle, simply peel off a little bit of the A/C tape and stick it between the two panels that are rattling. It is best to keep the use of the A/C tape to a minimum as you don't want an unusual, noticeable separation between panels, nor do you want the A/C tape to be visible to you and your passengers, as it is nasty looking. For longer panels that tend to rattle quite a bit, you may need to dab a little A/C tape in several key places to eliminate the rattling. Continue this process with every audible rattle until you are satisfied. Keep the A/C tape away from speaker cones, carpet, hairy-legged passengers, small animals, etc..
This process is time consuming, but the results are quickly noticeable.
