Default Back-up Camera

Ok... I posted about this in the Gen 2 section, but haven't seen any results. I know a lot of Gen 1 people have done this, so maybe I can get some help from you guys. I am going to be installing the Pioneer AVIC-D3 in my car and will be adding a back-up camera to it. I plan on taking out the rear wiper and installing the camera there. I would like to know if anyone knows of any good eBay vendors or any good cameras. I'm looking for something with a wide angle and infrared. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There are two types of cameras available in a keyhole size. They are CCD and CMOS. The picture will be much cleaner on a CCD camera. If the auction doesn't state what kind it is, it is safe to assume it is the cheaper CMOS version. Other than that, they are all very similar. I would recommend buying from someone in the US in case you have any issues.

I can't figure out which ebay seller I bought mine from, but he was based in Las Vegas and sold all kinds of private investigator stuff. The transaction went smooth and the camera is nice.

The diameter of the IR version is too big for the wiper hole in the first gen xB. I don't know if the hole in the second gen is the same size or not. A dremel will take care of that though..

Don't expect great performance from the "night vision". It really doesn't work that good. In fact, if I had to choose again between no night vision, and cutting the hole bigger, I would ditch the night vision and use a camera that fit in the stock hole.

Hope that helps

Thanks yo! That's exactly what I was looking for . I ended up buying a CCD with the LED's, because I like the thought of the LED's lighting up beings that I only have one reverse light . Thanks for all the help!

I ordered the D3 last week, so I'm hoping it gets here this week and will be installed this weekend. My buddy is an installer at Best Buy, so he'll be doing most of the work. I'll be sure and post pics of everything when I'm done. I think I'm most excited about changing the "mode" button on the steering wheel controls to the "ATT" button. Now I won't have to reach over to mute anymore.

I ordered my D3 through Crutchfield and got a free camera with the deal, I installed everything and the quality is great the only thing is mine is mounted on the liscence plate. I think the camera is made by Boyo.

It's the easiest mod. The hole is a 1inch hole and all you do is take of the wiper on outside then open back panel. unscrew the couple of nuts for the wiper moter and unplug the switch. Remove moter. I bought a color camera from local shop that fits perfect cost me $135. Has Power ,Ground, and video connection. Put cam wires thru hole and tightened it with nut that was provided by cam. Then I ran wires with snake thru tubing of back hatch and thru gromet to wear the headliner is. Then just feed the wires to appropriate places +,-,Video.

Good Luck
