get an amp that will put out double of what your sub requires. you'll have more headroom and play in your system. also remember distortion is the number 1 killer of speakers which occurs when you under power something.

I dont know why I didn't say anything before, but I have a brand new xtant 3001 amp. It is 300 watts RMS at 2 ohm. I will make you a great deal on it. I have 3 I used 2 on a set of comp speakers, and I had one for a back up. It is a nice small amp. 9.5" x 12" x 2". Titanium grey is the color.

Let me know if you are interested.

But what happens when you over power something? I'm having fears of sending 400W to a sub or speakers meant to handle 200W. Plus, aren't most high-end amps rated to run at full power w/o significant distortion?

you dont need to spend 300 on an amp where u need so little power. get the bazooka el1500, yes bazooka. although it can be bought for around 150, this amp is outstanding. i used to run this to two 4ohm alpine type r's and my friend has them going to 2 12" kicker L7's. a great amp for the money and it wont bust on u. good luck.
Thats what I have, but I have 2, they each power their own 12" Type R!!! Great bass, they were installed in the mustang, and if my xB ever arrives they will be in it very quickly!

I think you have to use common sense. I think what Elroy was trying to explain is that, dont put 100watts amp into a sub and turn the gain all the way up and your radio all the way up just to get more bass. That will cause a couple of problems. One your radio is probably clipping causing it to send distortion to the amp. Second, the gain control is only to level match the head unit and not a volume control. If you are saturating your input then you are also sending distortion to your speakers. Ive seen a lot of systems where you can only turn it a 1/4 way and the speakers are bottoming out. A system is designed to be turned close to max and not cut out or distort (depends on the radio).

By putting a 400w to a 200w sub and tuned properly, you will be ok.

If you guys want a crazy amp that is show quality, look into the Zapco amps. They're made in my old hometown Modesto!! All you need is a 100 watt amp and it'll power 15's. It's the cleanest most powerful amp I've ever heard!! Course you won't touch one for less than $500.

282 to your door not bad if your on a budget lookin for power
i agree - rockford has been around for a while and they are made in the us, i'm using the 400 model and it fine for my 2 12 type r alpines. i'm using hte 801s in my other car and think it is a little extreme.=) but who cares bass is meant to be felt.
Don't be fooled...RF use to be made in US. Not true anymore. Some of there skus are made in the US but the majority is overseas.

how much will the quality of the amp play in as a factor here? will there be a noticable difference in sound to a relativly green audiophile? (this is my first system i'm building, so naturally i need pointers) If it is so noticably better, then the new mission is to find the lowest price i can get one!
It does make a big difference on how it controls the subs. Inexpensive amps will perform sloppy and muddy. Also take note that not all specs are 100% accurate.. When the new CEA rating come out, it will tell a lot about a amp.
Denny,

From one manufacturer to another, I just want to let you know that ALL Rockford Fosgate amplifiers AND subwoofers are manufactured in the United States.

These forums are an excellent way to make consumers aware of cool products, let's not mislead them too much.
